NHS bosses<\/a> have been given temporary 10 per cent pay increases for leading a planned shakeup of Scotland’s health service.<\/a><\/p>\n Executives at NHS Lothian<\/a> and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde<\/a> were handed rises worth up to \u00a320,000 per year for leading a project to get health boards to improve services, reports the BBC.<\/a><\/p>\n Unions have slammed the move and claim thousands of frontline NHS staff <\/a>are being forced into taking on more responsibility without extra pay.<\/p>\n The Scottish government<\/a> is reviewing the pay hikes and said it would provide further details in due course.<\/p>\n They want the country’s 14 health board <\/a>to work closer together in the coming years to tackle longstanding problems like waiting time and treatment <\/a>delays.<\/p>\n MSPs have said health boards’ <\/a>geographical boundaries and accountabilities will remain but they have been split into west and east subnational planning and delivery committees (SPDC) for the initiative.<\/p>\n Detail about how SPDCs will work and be scrutinised is limited but the chief executives and chairpersons of NHS Lothian<\/a> and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde are in charge of setting it up – they have been given 10% pay increases and time away from their regular roles to do so.<\/p>\n NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde<\/a> is currently in the midst of the fallout of the Scottish Hospitals Inquiry after recently admitting that issues with its water systems were probably linked to infections, some of which were fatal.<\/p>\n Prof Caroline Hiscox (left) Jann Gardner (right).<\/p>\n Last year, inspectors found a “culture of mistrust” at a NHS Lothian <\/a>maternity unit.<\/p>\n The latest NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde<\/a> accounts show its chief executive Jann Gardner is on a whopping annual salary of between \u00a3195,000 and \u00a3200,000.<\/p>\n The board’s chairwoman Dr Lesley Thomson KC<\/a> earns an annual salary of between \u00a355,000 and \u00a360,000.<\/p>\n While, NHS Lothian’s chief executive<\/a> Prof Caroline Hiscox earns an annual salary of between \u00a3195,000 and \u00a3200,000.<\/p>\n Prof John Connaghan, the board’s chairman<\/a>, earns between \u00a350,000 and \u00a355,000.<\/p>\n Both boards confirmed a 10 per cent pay rise was in place for these people under NHS Scotland guidance for remunerating those undertaking temporary, additional responsibilities outwith their own health board.<\/a><\/p>\n Initial estimates suggest the executives<\/a> will take on the extra responsibilities for between nine and 12 months while the longer-term requirements are reviewed.<\/p>\n It currently remains unclear how much time the committee roles<\/a> are taking up for the senior executives.<\/p>\n More appointments to the SPDC<\/a>, such as medical and finance directors, are to be made from the ranks of existing boards with similar temporary salary increases expected for these roles.<\/p>\n![\"Prof](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/0_nhs.png\")
