The Blues subsequently signed two proven Championship players in the form of versatile attacker Anis Mehmeti (Bristol City, £3.5m) and midfielder Dan Neil (Sunderland, loan).

It’s understood that the scouting team, led by new head of recruitment Mick Court, put several possible striker targets to manager Kieran McKenna.

Town did enquire about a handful of front men over the course of the month, but the likes of Patrick Bamford (Sheffield United) and Joël Piroe (Leeds) chose to stay at their current clubs. And, as per the Mirror, the Blues are also understood to have had interest in Millwall winger Femi Azeez rebuffed.

When asked whether there would be any additional incoming business, McKenna said last week: “As I’ve said many times, we have good players here and we have a deep squad and if we can’t find a player in any position that really adds something extra or different to us, then we’ll crack on with the group that we have.

“Since this group’s come together at the start of September, I think we have probably gained more points than anyone in the league and we have improved along the way. I won’t waste a minute’s energy regretting (if we don’t sign anyone else). We’ll just focus on what’s coming up.”

Meanwhile, Sammie Szmodics’ departure from Portman Road remains in the balance following the 7pm deadline. It’s understood that negotiations with Derby County went down to the wire and a deal sheet may have been submitted.

After leaving Szmodics out of his squad for Saturday’s 1-1 home draw with Preston, McKenna said: “There’s been some offers, but nothing that the club sees as acceptable. If that doesn’t change he’ll be here come Tuesday.”

Town did sign two players for the Under-21s in the form of 19-year-old forward Frankie Runham (Chelsea, loan) and 17-year-old midfielder Ryan Doherty (Stevenage, six-figure fee).

The Blues are back in action tomorrow night when they take on Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

Town went into the window with chairman Mark Ashton admitting he ‘likes player trading’.
