\n\tJason Bateman<\/a> is getting flak on social media<\/a> for a seemingly awkward interview moment on the latest \u201cSmartLess\u201d podcast episode <\/a>in which he asked Charli xcx<\/a> about having children and then told her she might change her mind about not wanting kids. The Grammy winner stopped by the podcast to promote her new A24 movie \u201cThe Moment.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tThe topic of children came up when Bateman, who has two children with wife Amanda Anka, asked Charli: \u201cWould you love to have more than one kid or would you like to have a kid that has the same experience as you, the only child, and then you get to nurture and protect?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen the pop star responded by saying \u201cI actually don\u2019t really want to have kids,\u201d co-host Sean Hayes replied: \u201cYou don\u2019t? Wait, why? I know that\u2019s none of my business\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHayes noted that he also does not want to have kids, explaining: \u201cI want to want to have kids\u2026 I\u2019ve said it a million times, but I\u2019d rather regret not having kids then have them and regret it later. You never know what you\u2019re going to get.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThat could change,\u201d Charli said about her stance on becoming a mom. \u201cI love the fantasy of having a child like naming it \u2014 it sounds so fun \u2014 but I\u2019m like, that is exactly assigned to me as to why I should not have one, the fact that [naming it] feels like the coolest part about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBateman then told Charli that she might change her mind and pulled from personal experience by telling her: \u201cI mean I guess I\u2019m backing into giving myself a half-assed compliment here, but my wife did not want to have kids, so the story goes. She said once we started going out she thought, \u2018OK, I think I can have a kid with this guy.\u2019 So you might find somebody.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWell, I am married,\u201d Charli informed Bateman, noting her nuptials to the 1975 band member George Daniel.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI got to read a newspaper one of these days,\u201d Bateman wisecracked in response before joking: \u201cYour next husband, you\u2019re gonna want kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe conceit of the \u201cSmartLess<\/a>\u201d podcast, hosted by Bateman, Hayes and Will Arnett, is that one of the hosts brings on an interview subject without telling his fellow hosts, which means at least two of the co-hosts each episode can\u2019t prepare for the interview or research their interview subject. That might explain why Bateman has no idea Charli is married.<\/p>\n

\n\tVariety has reached out to Bateman\u2019s representative for comment.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs reported by The Independent<\/a>, social media users and Charli xcx fans were quick to defend the pop star against Bateman\u2019s comments.
