Tickets for \u2018The Odyssey,\u2019 Christopher Nolan\u2019s upcoming adaptation of Homer\u2019s epic starring Matt Damon as Odysseus (photo) and Tom Holland as his son Telemachus, are selling out more than a year ahead of its 2026 release.<\/p>\n
Filmgoers around the world are already clamoring for tickets to \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d the hotly anticipated new project by Oscar-winning director Sir Christopher Nolan \u2013 a full year before the film hits cinemas.<\/p>\n
As The Times of London reported this week, \u201c95 per cent of seats were reportedly snapped up within an hour\u201d when tickets went on sale last month at 26 IMAX cinemas worldwide. The film, due to premiere on July 17, 2026, is already generating record-breaking buzz \u2013 and creating a rare cinematic event twelve months out.<\/p>\n
The announcement of \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d surprised even seasoned industry insiders. Following the critical and commercial triumph of \u201cOppenheimer\u201d (2023) \u2013 which earned seven Oscars and nearly $1 billion at the box office \u2013 Nolan\u2019s next move was expected to lean further into cerebral storytelling (think \u201cInception,\u201d \u201cInterstellar,\u201d and the mind-boggling \u201cTenet\u201d). Instead, he\u2019s gone ancient: tackling Homer\u2019s epic tale of shipwrecks, monsters, meddling gods, and homecoming.<\/p>\n
Reflecting on the unprecedented anticipation, Phil Clapp, chief executive of the UK Cinema Association, told The Times: \u201cI can\u2019t think of anything like this. Typically, films go on sale one to two months early so this speaks to the anticipation there is for a Nolan film. Also, I\u2019m not saying a film about a nuclear physicist is the easiest sell, but a movie based on a Greek fable is probably even tougher \u2013 so this gets people talking.\u201d<\/p>\n
Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus and Tom Holland as his son Telemachus, the film also features Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong\u2019o, and Charlize Theron \u2013 rounding out an ensemble cast that suggests Nolan is going all in on scale and star power.<\/p>\n
Though plot details remain tightly guarded \u2013 how closely will Nolan stick to the original source material, composed sometime in the 8th BC \u2013 a brief teaser shows Holland saying: \u201cI have to find out what happened to my father,\u201d with a companion replying: \u201cWho has a story about Odysseus? Some said he perished. Some said he\u2019s imprisoned.\u201d<\/p>\n
Notably, parts of the film are being shot on location in Greece, including in Messinia, further linking the modern cinematic spectacle to its ancient roots. This continues a long tradition of filmmakers turning to Greek mythology for inspiration \u2013 from \u201cJason and the Argonauts\u201d (1963) and \u201cClash of the Titan\u201d (1981) to \u201cTroy\u201d (2004), and now, in Sir Nolan\u2019s typically enigmatic and visually bombastic fashion, \u201cThe Odyssey.\u201d<\/p>\n
Yet as excitement grows, so does scrutiny. A Reddit-fueled debate has emerged around historical authenticity, prompted by leaked stills showing Damon in stylized armor. Some online commentators have raised concerns \u2013 but author and essayist Daniel Mendelsohn, who has recently published a new translation of \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d cautions against over-literal readings.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to be super-emphatic about this,\u201d he told The Times. \u201cThe Odyssey was composed over generations and so to complain about its accuracy is to show a profound lack of understanding of what it is\u2026 There are films that got all the details right, from clothes to hairstyles, like Oliver Stone\u2019s \u2018Alexander,\u2019 but completely missed the point of the story they were telling. I just want a movie that feels like \u2018The Odyssey\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
With Nolan still filming \u2013 and only a teaser released \u2013 the cinematic journey is far from over. But if early indicators are anything to go by, \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d promises to be one of 2026\u2019s most talked-about releases.
