Pep Guardiola has spoken out against killings across the world, including in Sudan, where a paramilitary group backed by the United Arab Emirates<\/a>, which in effect owns Manchester City, is embroiled in a civil war that has cost more than 150,000 lives.<\/p>\n

Guardiola named Sudan<\/a> when talking about conflicts where innocent people were dying. War crimes are said to have been carried out by both sides in the conflict. The vice\u2011president of the UAE, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan, owns City, where Guardiola is the manager.<\/p>\n

\u201cNever in the history of \u00adhumanity have we had the info in front of our eyes more clearly than now,\u201d \u00adGuardiola said. \u201cThe genocide in \u00adPalestine, what happened in Ukraine, what happened all around the world \u2013 in Sudan, everywhere. What \u00adhappened in front of us? Do you want\u00a0to see it? It\u2019s our problem as human beings.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Rapid Support Forces in Sudan have been backed by the UAE, a position the Gulf state denies despite evidence compiled<\/a> by the UN, independent experts and reporters. The RSF has carried out mass killings<\/a> in the Sudanese city El\u00a0Fasher.<\/p>\n

In November the UAE admitted to errors in policy after reputational damage over its support for the RSF. Anwar Gargash, the UAE senior diplomatic envoy, said the UAE and others had been wrong not to impose sanctions on the instigators of the 2021 coup<\/a> \u2013 led jointly by the RSF and the army \u2013 that overthrew Sudan\u2019s transitional civilian government.<\/p>\n

Mansour bought City in \u00adSeptember 2008 and Guardiola became the \u00admanager in 2016. Last \u00adThursday \u00adGuardiola spoke at a charity event in\u00a0Barcelona about the need to protect children in Palestine, prompting questions before City\u2019s Carabao\u00a0Cup tie against Newcastle on Wednesday about\u00a0why he was vocal on humanitarian issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is about a better place for humanity,\u201d he said. \u201cThe people who run away from their countries, go in the sea and then go on a boat to get rescued: don\u2019t ask if he is right or wrong, rescue him. It is about a human being. After, we can agree, criticise. But people dying, you have\u00a0to help them.<\/p>\n

\u201cProtecting the human being is the only thing we have. Right now, we kill each other, for what? When I see the images, I am sorry, it hurts. It hurts me. That is why in every \u00adposition I can help speaking up to be a better society, I will try and be there.\u00a0It is for my kids, my families, for you. For all of you and your families as well and the kids.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom my point of view, the \u00adjustice: you have to talk. \u00adOtherwise it will just move on. Look what happened in the United States of \u00adAmerica, Ren\u00e9e Good<\/a> and Alex Pretti<\/a> have been killed \u2026 Tell me how you\u00a0can defend that?\u201d<\/p>\n
