Reviews might be embargoed until next Monday, but Los Angeles social media is getting hot under the collar after an early screening of Emerald Fennell\u2019s highly anticipated adaptation of Emily Bront\u00eb\u2019s Wuthering Heights<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIntoxicating, transcendent, tantalising, bewitching, lust worthy, hypnotic,\u201d wrote<\/a> Courtney Howard, adding that the film \u201cexpertly captures the breathtaking ache and essence of desire\u201d and \u201cis a god-tier new classic\u201d.<\/p>\n

Another user<\/a> called the film \u201centhralling\u201d and \u201cexquisite\u201d, and lavishing the nouns rather than the adjectives, called it \u201ca beautiful mess of passion, destruction, lust, revenge and unhinged behaviour. Throw the book away and step into the madness of undeniable chemistry and explosive toxic desire.\u201d<\/p>\n

Veteran film writer Anne Thompson predicted<\/a> the film \u201cwill open well and soar at the box office\u201d, calling it \u201ca rip-roaring, bodice-ripping crowd pleaser. Both Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie will come out ahead. Audiences will fall for Emerald Fennell\u2019s garish visuals and unrestrained direction. Everything is BIG.\u201d<\/p>\n

Box office pundit Scott Mendelson concurred<\/a>, saying that the film \u201crocks\u201d and praising its \u201cbig-budget production value and cinematic style value we once took for granted\u201d but also suggesting \u201cit works on its own terms as a nuanced romantic tragedy\u201d.<\/p>\n

A slight note of caution was voiced by Brandon Norwood, who called<\/a> the film \u201ca tad too long\u201d but said its stars are \u201cexplosive together. Their chemistry leaps off the screen.\u201d \u201cAnd yeah it\u2019s hot,\u201d he emphasises. \u201cIt\u2019s horny.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fennell\u2019s film has already been met with some scepticism by Bront\u00eb purists for its anachronistic approach to costume design, apparent embrace of BDSM, and the casting of 35-year-old Robbie as the 19-year-old Cathy and the white Elordi as Heathcliff, a character generally understood to be of Romany origin.<\/p>\n

Fennell has defended her approach, saying: \u201cThere\u2019s an enormous amount of sado-masochism in this book. There\u2019s a reason people were deeply shocked by it\u201d, and emphasising that her adaptation is a personal take, and one among many.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe great thing about this movie is that it could be made every year and it would still be so moving and so interesting,\u201d she said. \u201cThere are so many different takes. I think every year we should have a new one.\u201d<\/p>\n
