{"id":409221,"date":"2026-02-05T12:04:13","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T12:04:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/409221\/"},"modified":"2026-02-05T12:04:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T12:04:13","slug":"type-updates-london-home-with-robust-and-timeless-materials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/409221\/","title":{"rendered":"TYPE updates London home with &#8220;robust and timeless&#8221; materials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pale brick, clay-fired tiles and ash carpentry were used to bring tactility and warmth to this Victorian terrace <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/houses\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">house<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/london\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">London<\/a>, extended by local architecture studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/type\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TYPE<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Located in Denmark Hill, the home was expanded for a young family, with a larger kitchen and dining area introduced on the ground floor and an extra bedroom and home office in the attic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/typestudio.co.uk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TYPE<\/a> focused on creating a &#8220;sensory richness&#8221; for the interiors, with a tactile and natural palette based on the existing materiality of the 19th-century terrace.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2291965 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/type-denmark-hill-extension-london_dezeen_2364_col_16-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Rear extension by TYPE\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>TYPE has extended a Victorian home in south London<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is intentionally not one dominant element, the project was conceived as a series of modest but meaningful and holistic interventions which together transform daily life,&#8221; the studio told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One of the main themes was to create humanistic spaces which have a sensory richness, so the touch, acoustic properties, light, and smell were all important characteristics,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While being a contemporary space, the material selection relates to the existing construction, which is primarily clay and timber, both of which feature prominently in the extension and refurbishment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2291942 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/type-denmark-hill-extension-london_dezeen_2364_col_5-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Expanded kitchen within Denmark Hill extension\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The extension introduces an expanded kitchen and dining area on the ground floor<\/p>\n<p>At the back of Denmark Hill, a formerly narrow and dark galley kitchen has been expanded to make space for a dining area, illuminated by a long timber-framed skylight.<\/p>\n<p>A full-height pivot glass door opens this space out onto the garden, with the internal paved flooring extending out to a patio.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2291945 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/type-denmark-hill-extension-london_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x682.jpg\" alt=\"Interior view of Denmark Hill renovation by TYPE\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1891\"  \/>A tactile and natural palette draws on the terrace&#8217;s existing materiality<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the pivot door is a frameless corner window that projects out into the garden. It features a built-in bench made from ash, matching the carpentry of the kitchen cabinets and island.<\/p>\n<p>For the exterior of the ground-floor extension, two subtly different tones of hand-moulded masonry were used, with a lower datum finished in white brickwork and the upper section in pale cream.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/01\/19\/nimtim-architects-peek-a-blue-london-extension\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/nimtim-architects-peek-a-blue-london-extension-sq_dezeen_2364_col_3-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Peek-a-Blue by Nimtim Architects\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Nimtim Architects uses colour to unite extended London home\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Tactility, craftsmanship, and a feeling of warmth further inspired the choices of materials and construction,&#8221; the studio explained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was important to use robust, timeless, and natural materials which would be suitable for the heavy wear and tear of family life,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2291930 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/type-denmark-hill-extension-london_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Renovated interior of home extension by TYPE\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The dining area is illuminated by a timber-framed skylight<\/p>\n<p>In the new attic spaces, the walls have also been lined with ash panelling and built-in storage, and the floors finished in cork for acoustic comfort.<\/p>\n<p>Despite its relatively small size, a series of skylights and windows were introduced to provide views of the sky and city through the sloping white-painted ceilings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The bedroom includes a large vertical panoramic window which frames views of the city and sky, and rooflight above the shower floods the bathroom with light while giving a feeling of being outside, underneath the sky,&#8221;
