{"id":411052,"date":"2026-02-06T11:09:12","date_gmt":"2026-02-06T11:09:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/411052\/"},"modified":"2026-02-06T11:09:12","modified_gmt":"2026-02-06T11:09:12","slug":"tributes-to-bristol-royal-infirmarys-first-black-ward-sister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/411052\/","title":{"rendered":"Tributes to Bristol Royal Infirmary&#8217;s first black ward sister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A private funeral service will be held later to celebrate the life of a city hospital&#8217;s first Black ward sister.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">May Tanner came to the UK as part of the Windrush generation in 1956 before working at the Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI), where she remained for 20 years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">She died of a stroke in January at the age of 93.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Her husband of 65 years, Michael Tanner, said he was &#8220;very proud&#8221;, adding: &#8220;She got to the top of the BRI, with the professors.
