{"id":411127,"date":"2026-02-06T12:18:29","date_gmt":"2026-02-06T12:18:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/411127\/"},"modified":"2026-02-06T12:18:29","modified_gmt":"2026-02-06T12:18:29","slug":"exclusive-100s-face-axe-at-baker-mckenzie-as-ai-reliance-grows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/411127\/","title":{"rendered":"EXCLUSIVE 100s face axe at Baker McKenzie as AI reliance grows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/davepack.jpg\" data-entity-uuid=\"e449b283-774e-48b0-9168-44da183492ed\" data-entity-type=\"file\" alt=\"bakersred\" width=\"650\" height=\"488\"\/><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I&#8217;m sorry Dave, I&#8217;m afraid I can do that.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollonfriday.com\/firm\/baker-mckenzie\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Baker McKenzie<\/a> is laying off up to a tenth of its global business services workforce as part of a reorganisation driven in part by its increased use of AI.<\/p>\n<p>Sources told RollOnFriday this week that Bakers was cutting \u201cdozens of roles in London and Belfast\u201d and \u201c100s across the firm including in their offshore centers\u201d, across functions including know-how, research, marketing, secretarial\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>RollOnFriday understands the firm is seeking to make less than 10% of the worldwide support workforce redundant, equivalent to approximately 600-1,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson said, &#8220;we recently undertook a careful review of our business professionals functions\u201d in order to \u201cposition the Firm for continued growth and remain agile in a fast-evolving business context\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Sources told ROF this week that Bakers was cutting \u201cdozens of roles in London and Belfast\u201d and \u201c100s across the firm including in their offshore centers\u201d, across functions including know-how, research, marketing, secretarial\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson said, \u201cThis review was aimed at rethinking the ways in which we work, including through our use of AI, introducing efficiencies, and investing in those roles that best serve our clients&#8217; needs\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Pointing out that Bakers was not the only law firm making swingeing cuts to its legal support teams, the spokesperson said that \u201cFollowing the review, and consistent with many other organizations, we are proposing a series of changes to how we operate and deliver important business services\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In November, Clifford Chance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollonfriday.com\/news-content\/clifford-chance-cuts-10-business-services-staff-london\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cut 10%<\/a> of its UK business services staff while Irwin Mitchell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollonfriday.com\/news-content\/exclusive-staff-blame-ai-irwin-mitchell-scraps-all-litigation-assistants\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">slashed<\/a> all its litigation paralegals. Freshfields cited AI as it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollonfriday.com\/news-content\/exclusive-another-round-redundancies-rumoured-freshfields\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">laid off <\/a>paralegals in September<\/p>\n<p>Bakers suggested cryptically that \u201csome roles will likely be phased out\u201d but \u201cothers will evolve\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have not taken decisions around these proposed changes lightly, but felt it was necessary to deliver on our long-term plans.
