Of all of The Masked Singer UK <\/a>costumes this year, Toastie<\/a> is one of the most memorable.<\/p>\n Not just because of the incredible design of the character, with the cheese dripping down their outfit onto their shoes, their woolly hat and zip-up jacket, but because of their expression.<\/p>\n The team that created Toastie\u2019s look could have given them a beaming smile, in keeping with the overall cheery nature of the show.<\/p>\n But instead, the cartoonish figure looks downright terrified, and the reason for this choice of expression is the stuff of nightmares, costume designer Tim Simpson told Metro.<\/p>\n Tim, who\u2019s the creative director at Plunge Creations, explained that the concept behind Toastie was that they\u2019ve been \u2018bitten into, and so they\u2019re \u2018already terrified about their imminent demise\u2019.<\/p>\n \u2018That was the idea with Toastie, that this is a Toastie that is absolutely terrified that it\u2019s being eaten. Sign up to Metro’s TV newsletters and tell us which ones you can’t get enough of<\/p>\n \u2018I don\u2019t think we\u2019ve put fear into any of our costumes before, and so that kind of appealed to my sense of the ridiculous.\u2019<\/p>\n It\u2019s no accident that previous costumes on The Masked Singer haven\u2019t incorporated a \u2018sense of fear\u2019, as Tim believes that there\u2019s a \u2018reluctance to do anything that\u2019s going to scare the audience, or worry children\u2019.<\/p>\n \u2018But I think there is some space for that. I think there\u2019s some space to create a little bit of mischievous fear,\u2019 he added.<\/p>\n \u2018There\u2019s something slightly demonic about Gargoyle, if you want to take it that way, except it looks so big and smiley. There\u2019s a reason we\u2019ve avoided clowns, because so many people are scared of clowns. <\/p>\n \u2018So there are things that we shy away from. But I like to push the envelope, so who knows what I\u2019ll try and suggest next year.\u2019<\/p>\n \t\t However, Tim pointed out that this isn\u2019t the first time The Masked Singer UK has veered towards the playfully scary.<\/p>\n On New Year\u2019s Day in 2023, pundit Chris Kamara was revealed to be Ghost<\/a> on the programme \u2013\u00a0and his costume was literally a sheet with eyes placed over the top.<\/p>\n Proof that sometimes, even the simplest designs can be incredibly effective and entertaining.<\/p>\n \u2018I think you can be playful with all of these things. I think you can play around. We\u2019ve done a ghost, but it really wasn\u2019t a very scary ghost,\u2019 Tim said.<\/p>\n \u2018We\u2019ve done a slightly demonic-looking Gargoyle.
