Citing \u201csources familiar with the matter,\u201d Reuters reports that SpaceX has plans for \u201ca Starlink phone, direct-to-device internet and a space-tracking service.\u201d The phone could help SpaceX \u201cexpand its reach into new markets\u201d and be part of the company\u2019s plans to \u201cbuild data centers that orbit Earth,\u201d Reuters says.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n Reuters pointed out that Starlink has been working with T-Mobile<\/a> to deliver mobile signal between satellites and users\u2019 devices. The outlet also noted that SpaceX has filed to trademark the \u201cStarlink Mobile\u201d name and that Musk himself has said one of the goals for SpaceX\u2019s satellite-to-mobile service is to \u201cdeliver full cellular coverage everywhere on Earth.\u201d These factors all seem to indicate SpaceX\u2019s interest in mobile technology.<\/p>\n You may like<\/p>\n However, after the Reuters report was shared with him on X, Musk retorted<\/a> that \u201cwe are not developing a phone.\u201d Reading between the lines, Musk\u2019s initial post could simply be outlining the kind of device he would like to develop in the future, with his second post clarifying that his companies are not actively developing such a product right now.<\/p>\n The phone of the future<\/p>\n \n (Image credit: The Joe Rogan Experience)<\/p>\n Musk has previously been a little more nuanced in his denials about a Starlink phone. Posting on X on January 30, Musk said<\/a> that a Starlink phone was \u201cnot out of the question at some point,\u201d adding that \u201cit would be a very different device than current phones.\u201d The SpaceX chief said it would be \u201coptimized purely for running max performance\/watt neural nets,\u201d referring to potential artificial intelligence (AI)<\/a> capabilities.<\/p>\n Speaking on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast<\/a> in October 2025, Musk also clarified his ideas surrounding mobile technology, stating it was his belief that \u201cwe\u2019re not going to have a phone in the traditional sense. What we\u2019ll call a phone will really be an edge node for AI inference with some radios to connect.\u201d In other words, phones will not exist in the traditional sense \u2013 with operating systems<\/a> and apps \u2013 but will instead essentially be vehicles for AI to create whatever it is you want to see or do, Musk argued.<\/p>\n Reuters contends that SpaceX \u201chas had the mobile phone plans for years,\u201d but what shape those plans will take is still unknown. Musk is evidently interested in the idea but sees a very different path compared to the device you might have in your pocket today.<\/p>\n Regardless of what SpaceX decides to do, the company has an active interest in providing satellite service to mobile users.
