Olivia Colman has opened up about her gender identity, saying she has always “felt sort of nonbinary”.<\/p>\n

The Oscar-winning actress, 52, is starring in new queer film Jimpa, playing a mother who takes her nonbinary child to visit their gay grandfather, played by John Lithgow, abroad.<\/p>\n

\u201cThroughout my whole life, I’ve had arguments with people where I’ve always sort of felt nonbinary,\u201d she told Them. <\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never felt massive feminine in my being female. I’ve always described myself to my husband as a gay man.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd he goes \u2018yeah I get that\u2019. And so I do feel at home and at ease.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cI don’t really spend a whole lot of time with people who are very staunchly heterosexual.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked why her career \u201chas always featured stories that include the queer community\u201d, Colman replied: \u201cI think it\u2019s a community that I love being welcomed into.<\/p>\n

\u201cI find the most loving and the most beautiful stories are from that community. And I feel really honoured to be welcomed.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2024, Colman shared her frustrations over the need for equal pay in the film industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019ve been many fantastic female-centric films which have moved me. And some of the biggest-grossing films, Barbie, Bridesmaids, Thelma & Louise, are led by women,\u201d she vented to the Radio Times podcast<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople say men get paid more because they get more bums on seats. That\u2019s a lie! It can be proved in the box office. I don\u2019t know why we\u2019re still having to discuss it!\u201d<\/p>\n

Reflecting on her early struggles in the industry, she recalled \u201csleeping on friends’ sofas\u201d and barely being able to afford bus fare.<\/p>\n

Noting: \u201cMy first year out of drama school, I went for 100 auditions and didn\u2019t get one. I thought my agent was going to dump me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Colman\u2019s big break came in Channel 4 sitcom Peep Show <\/a>as Sophie Chapman, the co-worker and on-off love interest of main character Mark Corrigan (David Mitchell).<\/p>\n

She has since experienced a meteoric rise to fame thanks to television roles including Broadchurch and The Crown, plus, lauded big screen parts in The Favourite and The Father.<\/p>\n
