{"id":416735,"date":"2026-02-09T20:34:48","date_gmt":"2026-02-09T20:34:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/416735\/"},"modified":"2026-02-09T20:34:48","modified_gmt":"2026-02-09T20:34:48","slug":"rule-confusion-continues-as-trofeo-alfredo-binda-invite-five-womens-continental-teams-to-2026-edition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/416735\/","title":{"rendered":"Rule confusion continues as Trofeo Alfredo Binda invite five women&#8217;s Continental teams to 2026 edition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"d58f157c-74c5-4be3-a524-feff12c37980\">For all that the UCI seem to be applying new handlebar width rules with ineffable stringency at the start of this season, other new regulations are not being applied so fiercely, as confusion over team eligibility in the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/features\/womens-worldtour-the-definitive-guide\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/features\/womens-worldtour-the-definitive-guide\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/features\/womens-worldtour-the-definitive-guide\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Women&#8217;s WorldTour<\/a> continues.<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/womens-cycling\/im-afraid-that-the-level-goes-down-could-the-latest-womens-worldtour-rule-changes-pile-the-pressure-onto-riders-and-ultimately-harm-the-sport\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/womens-cycling\/im-afraid-that-the-level-goes-down-could-the-latest-womens-worldtour-rule-changes-pile-the-pressure-onto-riders-and-ultimately-harm-the-sport\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/womens-cycling\/im-afraid-that-the-level-goes-down-could-the-latest-womens-worldtour-rule-changes-pile-the-pressure-onto-riders-and-ultimately-harm-the-sport\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">latest batch of updated rules for the Women&#8217;s WorldTour<\/a> ostensibly included the stipulation that Continental teams could no longer compete in WWT events, which would now be limited to World- and ProTeams only, in line with the men&#8217;s peloton.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"d58f157c-74c5-4be3-a524-feff12c37980-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">This was a move to fully professionalise the top tier of racing, but raised concerns among many teams and races, such as the Tour of Britain Women, where the participation of British Continental teams has always been central.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">However, as the first WorldTour races of 2026 have got underway, there has been a lack of clarity over whether this rule is really being applied or not.<\/p>\n<p>At the Tour Down Under and Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, no Continental teams were present \u2013 previously Australian squads would be invited. But <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/womens-cycling\/the-more-you-have-the-better-it-is-why-three-continental-teams-were-allowed-to-skirt-uci-regulations-and-race-the-uae-tour\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/womens-cycling\/the-more-you-have-the-better-it-is-why-three-continental-teams-were-allowed-to-skirt-uci-regulations-and-race-the-uae-tour\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/womens-cycling\/the-more-you-have-the-better-it-is-why-three-continental-teams-were-allowed-to-skirt-uci-regulations-and-race-the-uae-tour\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">at the UAE Tour Women, three Conti teams were in attendance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What may have seemed like RCS wielding their power over the UCI only became more confusing when <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/trofeo-alfredo-binda-comune-di-cittiglio\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/trofeo-alfredo-binda-comune-di-cittiglio\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/trofeo-alfredo-binda-comune-di-cittiglio\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trofeo Alfredo Binda<\/a> \u2013 put on by a smaller, independent organiser \u2013 also invited all five Italian women&#8217;s Continental teams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Per Cyclingnews&#8217; understanding of the rules and answers from the UCI, there is a provision whereby races can invite Continental teams if they do not otherwise meet the minimum requirement of 15 teams, but that isn&#8217;t applicable to either UAE or Trofeo Binda, with the latter set to have the maximum of 24 teams on the start line.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">The latest race content, interviews, features, reviews and expert buying guides, direct to your inbox!<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">There is no specific rule governing whether races can invite Continental teams simply out of preference, but that appears to be what&#8217;s happening, in something of an unwritten rule.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&#8220;You need to ask if you want to invite a Continental team, so then the choice is based on rankings,&#8221; the race director of the UAE Tour told Cyclingnews, whilst the UCI said that: &#8220;Organiser [sic] can always make a request that will be assessed by the UCI, in compliance with UCI Regulations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The question remains over why the UCI would create a rule only to grant exceptions seemingly without reasoning.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-7cebbbd3-9d2e-4970-8381-1a7ed2a7f27b\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Organisers reaffirm commitment to be a &#8216;pillar of women&#8217;s cycling&#8217;<\/p>\n<p id=\"c051b571-04b2-40d7-a4af-d2838617cbbd\">Rule confusion aside, Trofeo Binda&#8217;s confirmation of invited teams also came alongside a reaffirmation of their commitment to the development of women&#8217;s cycling, as well as safety improvements.<\/p>\n<p>The race, which continues to exist as a rare independently organised race amidst a sea of men&#8217;s races coming into the women&#8217;s calendar, has survived the arrival of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/milan-san-remo-women\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/milan-san-remo-women\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/milan-san-remo-women\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">women&#8217;s Milan-San Remo<\/a> and will once again host a WorldTour and junior event in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Trofeo Alfredo Binda is a project that lasts all year and is deeply rooted in its territory. The Trofeo Binda and the Piccolo Binda are the only cycling events born as women\u2019s races that have remained exclusively dedicated to women\u2019s cycling,&#8221; said Mario Minervino, President of organisers Cycling Sport Promotion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today, they represent a stable pillar of the international calendar. Young people are at the centre of our vision: through schools, safety education and sustainability projects, they become ambassadors of cycling and its values.
