We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>Millions of families are grappling with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/households-bills-budget-cost-of-living-which-b2858078.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">historic drop in living standards<\/a> as today\u2019s generation faces the slowest income growth in decades, a new report has warned.<\/p>\n<p>Research from the influential Resolution Foundation think tank has found that it would take more than a lifetime \u2013 137 years \u2013 for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/dwp-payments-cost-of-living-crisis-housing-councils-b2901675.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lower-income families <\/a>to see the doubling of living standards previously enjoyed every 40 years.<\/p>\n<p>This has been driven by slowing growth, researchers say, as people \u201care working harder but seeing their incomes stagnate nonetheless.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>From the 1960s to the mid-2000s, the disposable income of working-age families doubled, the report finds, growing 1.8 per cent a year. Since then, this has slowed to 0.5 per cent, and even dropped for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/poverty-child-uk-report-jrf-benefit-cap-labour-b2907728.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the poorest families.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In-work <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/poverty\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">poverty<\/a> has become a growing issue, as 55 per cent of households living in poverty now contain at least one working person, researchers add. This has risen from 38 per cent in the mid-90s.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/houses-estate-stock.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>(Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Ruth Curtice, chief executive of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/resolution-foundation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Resolution Foundation<\/a>, said: \u201cThe 13 million working-age families across the poorest half of the country are widely courted by politicians. But despite working harder they have seen their disposable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/incomes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">incomes<\/a> stagnate, as they grapple with shrinking pay rises, higher costs and a growing struggle with their health and care needs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe stalling of disposable incomes means that many families\u2019 hopes of home ownership have evaporated and work is not a guaranteed a route out of poverty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/research\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">research<\/a> forms part of a wide-ranging new book, Unsung Britain, in which the Resolution Foundation warns that failing to address the \u201cmalaise\u201d of lower-income families as they feel the impact of these trends risks \u201cfurther political disruption\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>One of the key recommendations from the think tank is to reform the \u2018unfair\u2019 council tax system, with the very poorest households now spend four times as much as a share of their income compared to the very richest households.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/5c7c545712f916b3645f11e21a454ad0Y29udGVudHNlYXJjaGFwaSwxNzcwNzQzMDQ3-2.83329939.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Prime minister Sir Keir Starmer said in January that the government is \u201cdoing everything we can to ease the cost of living\u201d (Peter Nicholls\/PA)\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>Prime minister Sir Keir Starmer said in January that the government is \u201cdoing everything we can to ease the cost of living\u201d (Peter Nicholls\/PA) (PA Wire)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/living-standards\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Living standards<\/a> should be put \u201cat the heart\u201d of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/government\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">government<\/a> policy, the report adds, through cost of living-focused measures such as targeted discounts on energy bills and bus fares, <\/p>\n<p>Sir Keir Starmer has said that tackling the cost of living is one of his government\u2019s key priorities this year, telling families in January: \u201cThis Labour government is on your side, doing everything we can to ease the cost of living, and make life better. In 2026, the choices we made will mean more people begin to feel that positive change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Labour government continues to struggle with dropping popularity in the polls, as political drama and the high cost of living impacts public opinion.
