{"id":417835,"date":"2026-02-10T10:36:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-10T10:36:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/417835\/"},"modified":"2026-02-10T10:36:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T10:36:07","slug":"telstra-joint-venture-to-axe-more-than-200-jobs-amid-ai-rollout-telstra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/417835\/","title":{"rendered":"Telstra joint venture to axe more than 200 jobs amid AI rollout | Telstra"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">More than 200 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/telstra\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Telstra<\/a> jobs are expected to be cut, as the telco rolls out AI capabilities and sends some jobs to India.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Telstra and the technology consultancy Accenture announced a $700m joint venture (JV) in 2025 to drive efficiency, modernisation and productivity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A JV spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday that the team had been notified \u201cabout proposed changes to its workforce, including reducing roles where work is no longer needed, and moving some work to the JV team in India\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">If the changes proceed, the spokesperson said, affected team members would be helped to find new jobs either at Telstra or at Accenture, or have \u201caccess to our leading career transition program and retrenchment benefits\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThese changes would see the JV use Accenture\u2019s global capabilities, advanced AI expertise and specialist hub in India to deliver Telstra\u2019s data and AI roadmap more quickly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe anticipate that over time this would result in improved cost efficiencies and bring an enhanced experience to Telstra\u2019s customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It is understood 209 jobs face the axe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In 2024, Telstra announced it would cut 2,800 jobs from its enterprise business, which services businesses and government agencies. The cuts wouldn\u2019t affect retail customers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/article\/2024\/may\/21\/telstra-job-cuts-2800-roles-changes-customer-impact\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">it said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In May 2025, Telstra said \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/may\/27\/telstra-ai-job-cuts-investors-workforce\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI efficiencies<\/a>\u201d would allow it to shrink its workforce by 2030.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Telstra\u2019s chief executive, Vicki Brady, said AI would \u201cbe a significant unlock when it comes to enabling our workforce\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Agentic AI \u2013 which can work autonomously \u2013 would be working alongside Telstra staff, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Optus has previously said AI would have a big role to play in telecommunications but that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/may\/26\/artificial-intelligence-humans-optus-ceo-stephen-rue\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">humans would remain central<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Announcing the JV, Telstra said it would drive productivity and growth, \u201cbuild on Telstra\u2019s work creating a world-class data and AI ecosystem, modernising its data and AI platforms, and embedding responsible AI by design\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe are entering a new era of AI-driven reinvention,\u201d the Accenture chair and chief executive officer, Julie Sweet, said at the time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"More than 200 Telstra jobs are expected to be cut, as the telco rolls out AI capabilities and&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":417836,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[20],"tags":[554,733,4308,86,56,54,55],"class_list":{"0":"post-417835","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-artificial-intelligence","8":"tag-ai","9":"tag-artificial-intelligence","10":"tag-artificialintelligence","11":"tag-technology","12":"tag-uk","13":"tag-united-kingdom","14":"tag-unitedkingdom"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/417835","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=417835"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/417835\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/417836"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=417835"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=417835"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=417835"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
