LCD Soundsystem<\/a> soundtracked an advert for Elon Musk\u2019s SpaceX during the 2026 Super Bowl last weekend.<\/p>\n

James Murphy<\/a> and co\u2019s 2017 song \u2018Oh Baby\u2019<\/a> featured in the promo for Starlink, which is a satellite internet service operated by Musk\u2019s aerospace company (via Stereogum<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The 30-second ad promises \u201cfast, affordable internet\u201d for users \u201call around the world\u201d. The synthy and twinkling instrumental of \u2018Oh Baby\u2019 accompanies clips of rockets taking off, space footage, various nature scenes and more.<\/p>\n

Fans have since been sharing their thoughts on LCD\u2019s controversial promo spot, given Musk\u2019s appearance in the latest Epstein files release, his past ties to Donald Trump<\/a> and the CEO seemingly giving a Nazi-like gesture last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In a thread on Reddit<\/a> \u2013 titled \u2018not too thrilled about \u2018Oh Baby\u2019 in a Starlink commercial\u2019 \u2013 one fan wrote: \u201cAll your heroes will take the paycheck.\u201d Another said: \u201cFuck this. Disappointing. You have enough to say no.\u201d<\/p>\n

A third user commented: \u201cThere is selling out and then there is selling out to this guy.\u201d Someone else shared: \u201cStill love their music but yeah this sucks. Reminded me of that gig they did for that NFT company.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the latter post referred to, LCD Soundsystem performed at Bored Ape Yacht Club\u2019s ApeFest as part of an NFT event in New York in 2022.<\/p>\n

LCD have licensed their music for adverts in the past. \u2018Someone Great\u2019 was used in a promo for a Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch in 2013, and \u2018Daft Punk Is Playing At My House\u2019 was in some eBay spots in 2024.<\/p>\n

In another recent Reddit thread<\/a>, a fan suggested that Murphy had perhaps \u201csold the rights to LCD\u2019s catalogue for commercial use\u201d, adding: \u201cMaybe he no longer has the final say in which ads LCD\u2019s music is used in? I may be coping lol.\u201d<\/p>\n

Someone replied: \u201cEvery [major] artist is signed to a publishing company [whose] job is to distribute their clients\u2019 intellectual property and chase the royalties for its usage. So yes.\u201d However, a second user simply said that \u201cmoney talks\u201d.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, a separate post<\/a> read: \u201cLove their music but this is not OK. License your music out for a car commercial if you need money, not to a legitimate nazi.\u201d<\/p>\n

NME has contacted LCD Soundsystem\u2019s representatives for comment.<\/p>\n

Musk\u2019s recent appearance in the Epstein files includes a 2012 email, in which he asked the convicted sex offender via email: \u201cWhat day\/night will be the wildest party on your island?\u201d<\/p>\n

Another email read: \u201cDo you have any parties planned? I\u2019ve been working to the edge of sanity this year and so, once my kids head home after Christmas, I really want to hit the party scene in St Baits or elsewhere and let loose. The invitation is much appreciated, but a peaceful island experience is the opposite of what I\u2019m looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n

Late last month, Musk responded in a statement on X. \u201cNo one pushed harder than me to have the Epstein files released and I\u2019m glad that has finally happened,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had very little correspondence with Epstein and declined repeated invitations to go to his island or fly on his \u2018Lolita Express\u2019, but was well aware that some email correspondence with him could be misinterpreted and used by detractors to smear my name.\u201d<\/p>\n

Musk added: \u201cI don\u2019t care about that, but what I do care about is that we at least attempt to prosecute those who committed serious crimes with Epstein, especially regarding heinous exploitation of underage girls.\u201d<\/p>\n

Musk\u2019s X platform is currently\u00a0under investigation after its Grok AI<\/a> bot was used to generate many non\u2011consensual sexual images of users (via ICO<\/a>). Last month, Maya Jama hit out at the \u201cscary\u201d and sexually explicit deepfakes created using Musk\u2019s chatbot<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, LCD Soundsystem played their classic song \u2018Too Much Love\u2019 for the first time in 14 years<\/a> last December as they wrapped up their New York residency.<\/p>\n

In 2024, it was\u00a0revealed that the band would be releasing a new album<\/a> in 2025, but this did not materialise. The update came after LCD dropped a brand-new single, \u2018X-Ray Eyes\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Murphy later\u00a0shared an update about the progress on the follow-up to 2017\u2019s \u2018American Dream\u2019<\/a>, saying: \u201cSo there\u2019s a new LCD song called \u2018X-Ray Eyes\u2019. It\u2019s the first single of what\u2019s shaping up to be a new LCD Soundsystem album.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t ask me when that is, because we are still working on it. But it feels very good to be putting out new music.\u201d<\/p>\n

The frontman went on to reiterate that \u201cthere is no finished LP yet\u201d, adding: \u201cBut when we are not playing shows, it\u2019s getting closer and closer to completion. So that\u2019s the news. Anything else you hear is bullshit speculation.\u201d<\/p>\n
