{"id":420145,"date":"2026-02-11T15:55:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-11T15:55:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/420145\/"},"modified":"2026-02-11T15:55:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T15:55:09","slug":"space-company-behind-plans-to-launch-satellite-from-unst-to-enter-administration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/420145\/","title":{"rendered":"Space company behind plans to launch satellite from Unst to enter administration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A UK-BASED space company \u2013 which had been due to launch a satellite from Unst this year \u2013 is set to enter administration.<\/p>\n<p>Orbex, which is a space rocket manufacturer and orbital launch company, is in the process of appointing administrators after fundraising, merger and acquisition opportunities all concluded unsuccessfully.<\/p>\n<p>It has now filed a notice of intention to appointment administrators, but will continue trading while all options for the future of the company are explored.<\/p>\n<p>These including potential sale of all or parts of its business or assets.<\/p>\n<p>Orbex said it sought funding from a \u201cvariety of public and private investors\u201d, which had \u201cultimately failed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s chief executive Phil Chambers said that \u201cdisappointing doesn\u2019t come close to describing how we feel about this moment\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been successfully developing a sustainable, world-class sovereign space launch capability for the UK and were on the cusp of our first test flights later this year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is no secret that designing and building space rockets to enable a launch service is a capital-intensive, highly advanced process with a long development cycle that creates a \u2018scale-up\u2019 funding gap.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstitutional support is a crucial to bridge this gap and we have worked tirelessly to try to find both funding or rescue solutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is most disappointing is that we have brought hundreds of skilled jobs to Scotland; we have been at the vanguard of the UK\u2019s space ambitions; we have led the way in driving good news about the UK\u2019s space sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYet all of this progress now risks being undone \u2013 and it is real people who will feel the consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Orbex had been planning to launch its first satellite from SaxaVord Spaceport in 2025, but in June last year said it was likely to be 2026 before the first launch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"row-text sign-in-message\">Already a member? <a href=\"https:\/\/account.shetnews.co.uk\/?redirect_to=https:\/\/www.shetnews.co.uk\/2026\/02\/11\/space-company-behind-plans-launch\/\" title=\"Sign in\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign in<\/a> to hide this message.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Orbex said \u201cmoving parts\u201d, including infrastructure requirements and engagement with regulators, had led to the slippage at the time.<\/p>\n<p>SaxaVord Spaceport chief executive Scott Hammond called it a \u201csad day for Orbex\u201d, but said it would have \u201cvery little impact on SaxaVord\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we had agreed heads of terms with the company, Orbex had never reached a position to start on site at SaxaVord and let us develop infrastructure for them to launch from.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur business model has always been multi-client because at the outset we recognised that in what is a very competitive rocket launch market not all players would succeed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor us, fortunately, it is business as usual as we work with our other clients on testing, test flights and launches in the months and years ahead.
