{"id":420504,"date":"2026-02-11T20:21:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-11T20:21:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/420504\/"},"modified":"2026-02-11T20:21:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T20:21:09","slug":"third-avatar-gross-is-half-of-the-first","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/420504\/","title":{"rendered":"Third &#8220;Avatar&#8221; Gross Is Half Of The First"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/third-avatar-gross-is-half-of-the-first.jpg\" data-caption=\"20th Century Studios\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" class=\"entry-thumb td-modal-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/third-avatar-gross-is-half-of-the-first.jpg\"   alt=\"\" title=\"third-avatar-gross-is-half-of-the-first\"\/><\/a>20th Century Studios<\/p>\n<p>James Cameron\u2019s \u201cAvatar: Fire and Ash\u201d is appears to be closing out its worldwide box-office run with a haul of over $1.44 billion globally, coming in a little under estimates that were projecting a total of around $1.7 billion according to <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/box-office\/avatar-sequels-harder-to-justify-1236656325\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Variety<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It looks as though the film will end at around half the gross of the original\u2019s $2.9 billion and considerably behind the second one\u2019s $2.3 billion worldwide gross. Both those films ranked No. 1 at the box office for seven consecutive weekends, whereas \u2018Fire and Ash\u2019 relinquished its crown after its fifth weekend.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s noticeable domestically too, where the recent one has just hit $392 million compared to the $688 million total haul of the second.  Despite the shortfall, it\u2019s still the second-biggest Hollywood film release globally in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The trade indicates that the studio spent around $500 million to produce and promote the third film, meaning the profit margin for each film is getting considerably slimmer. <\/p>\n<p>Will Disney still pursue the next two \u201cAvatar\u201d films if they can\u2019t be done more cost-effectively?  Stephen Galloway, Dean of Chapman University\u2019s film school, tells the trade:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s one thing to say, \u2018This was profitable, not massively so, but the property benefits us in other ways, especially theme parks. It\u2019s another to say, \u2018We\u2019re going to invest another $500 million twice,\u2019 if you\u2019re on this downward trajectory. I imagine Disney is doing a lot to put the brakes on budgets \u2013 and that may eventually lead to a breaking point.
