{"id":422484,"date":"2026-02-12T22:13:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-12T22:13:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/422484\/"},"modified":"2026-02-12T22:13:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-12T22:13:09","slug":"leclerc-fastest-as-norris-completes-most-laps-on-day-two","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/422484\/","title":{"rendered":"Leclerc fastest as Norris completes most laps on day two"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/driver\/charles-leclerc\/840485\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Charles Leclerc<\/a> was fastest on day two of Formula 1\u2019s 2026 pre-season test in Bahrain, pipping world champion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/driver\/lando-norris\/840487\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Lando Norris<\/a> who completed the most mileage.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/team\/ferrari\/36466\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ferrari<\/a> driver set a 1m34.273s early in the morning session with his time on softs subsequently going unbeaten &#8211; 0.511s quicker than the medium-running <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/team\/mclaren\/36473\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">McLaren<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/f1\/news\/f1-bahrain-pre-season-test-norris-leads-from-verstappen-on-opening-day\/10796794\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">which was fastest on day one<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Norris\u2019 time also came in the morning as teams conducted more long-run programmes in the afternoon, while three red flag periods headlined the post-lunch session.<\/p>\n<p>The first occurred midway through when\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/driver\/valtteri-bottas\/829609\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Valtteri Bottas<\/a> lost a part of his Cadillac\u2019s right mirror, which landed on the track and nearly hit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/team\/williams\/36474\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Williams<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/driver\/carlos-sainz\/829244\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Carlos Sainz<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The stoppage lasted for approximately 10 minutes, before another red flag intervened very shortly after due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/driver\/pierre-gasly\/840483\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Pierre Gasly\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/team\/alpine\/39174\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Alpine<\/a> stopping at Turn 1. A final red flag waved towards the end of the session to simply test the procedure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It was the third time that Alpine caused a red flag since the start of the Barcelona shakedown last month, but it wasn\u2019t the only Mercedes-powered outfit to suffer problems on day two in Bahrain.<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1770934389_802_george-russell-mercedes.jpg\" alt=\"George Russell, Mercedes\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">George Russell, Mercedes<\/p>\n<p class=\"photographer\">Photo by: Zak Mauger \/ LAT Images via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because the factory squad completed just three laps via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/driver\/andrea-kimi-antonelli\/953410\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Andrea Kimi Antonelli<\/a> in the morning session, as a power unit issue ruled out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/team\/mercedes\/36495\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Mercedes<\/a> driver for much of the session.<\/p>\n<p>But things improved after lunch as Antonelli\u2019s team-mate, and the bookmakers&#8217; title favourite, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/driver\/george-russell\/840489\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">George Russell<\/a> moved up to fourth in the leaderboard with 54 laps completed &#8211; three short of a Bahrain race distance.<\/p>\n<p>It came after the Briton set a 1m35.466s, putting him a second behind Leclerc but only 0.072s off third-placed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/driver\/oliver-bearman\/876509\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Oliver Bearman<\/a>, with whom he constantly swapped positions all afternoon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Russell\u2019s Mercedes has arguably been one of the two most talked about teams in pre-season with the other being Red Bull, which made headlines on Wednesday as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/driver\/max-verstappen\/829269\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Max Verstappen<\/a> completed the most mileage.<\/p>\n<p>Read Also:<\/p>\n<p>But then, like Mercedes, it had its running curtailed on day two in the morning as newly promoted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/driver\/isack-hadjar\/869518\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Isack Hadjar<\/a> endured a hydraulic leak on his RB22, which meant the Frenchman completed just one lap.<\/p>\n<p>Hadjar bounced back in the afternoon though with the fifth-fastest lap time, a 1m36.561s, meaning he and the rest of the field were at least two seconds behind the lead.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1770934389_632_isack-hadjar-red-bull-racing.jpg\" alt=\"Isack Hadjar, Red Bull Racing\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">Isack Hadjar, Red Bull Racing<\/p>\n<p class=\"photographer\">Photo by: Guido De Bortoli \/ LAT Images via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>This comes with the usual caveat of it being pre-season testing and at such an early stage, the focus is on mileage instead of lap time considering everybody is on different rubber.<\/p>\n<p>So it was Norris who led that particular leaderboard on Thursday, with 149 laps of Bahrain International Circuit ahead of Leclerc (139), Bearman (130), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/driver\/fernando-alonso\/829156\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Fernando Alonso<\/a> (98) and then Gasly (97).<\/p>\n<p>That obviously favours the drivers who drove all day rather than share running with their team-mate, as Mercedes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/team\/audi\/49024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Audi<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/team\/alphatauri-36471\/36471\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Racing Bulls<\/a>, Cadillac and Williams all split track time between drivers.<\/p>\n<p>But it was still McLaren that conducted the most mileage of all teams with Ferrari in second, ahead of Racing Bulls (133), Williams (131), Haas (130) and Audi (114) with Cadillac (109) being the seventh and final team to hit a century of laps.<\/p>\n<p>F1 Bahrain pre-season test &#8211;
