It does\u00adn\u2019t take too long a look at the almost sur\u00adre\u00adal\u00adis\u00adti\u00adcal\u00adly clean-lined build\u00adings of Wal\u00adter Gropius<\/a> to get the impres\u00adsion that the man want\u00aded to ush\u00ader in a new world, espe\u00adcial\u00adly when you con\u00adsid\u00ader that many of them went up before World War II.\u00a0Take the Bauhaus Dessau build\u00ading<\/a>, which, though com\u00adplet\u00aded exact\u00adly a cen\u00adtu\u00adry ago, looks like a con\u00adcrete trans\u00admis\u00adsion from the future that nev\u00ader arrived, or one that may indeed still be on the way. It once housed the Ger\u00adman art school<\/a> turned polit\u00adi\u00adcal and cul\u00adtur\u00adal engine he found\u00aded in 1919, whose prin\u00adci\u00adples includ\u00aded absolute equal\u00adi\u00adty between male and female par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpants \u2014 or they did at first, at any rate.<\/p>\n

Soon decid\u00ading that the new insti\u00adtu\u00adtion would\u00adn\u2019t be tak\u00aden seri\u00adous\u00adly with too high a pro\u00adpor\u00adtion of women, Gropius lim\u00adit\u00aded their enroll\u00adment to one-third of the stu\u00addent body. That episode, among oth\u00aders that under\u00adscore the ways in which Gropius and the Bauhaus\u2019 osten\u00adsi\u00adble com\u00admit\u00adment to the advance\u00adment of women was\u00adn\u2019t all it could be, fig\u00adures into Susanne Radel\u00adhof\u2019s doc\u00adu\u00admen\u00adtary The Untold Sto\u00adry of Bauhaus Women<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Yet what\u00adev\u00ader the short\u00adcom\u00adings in that depart\u00adment one might iden\u00adti\u00adfy from a twen\u00adty-first cen\u00adtu\u00adry van\u00adtage, the fact remains that the Bauhaus made pos\u00adsi\u00adble \u2014 or at least encour\u00adaged \u2014 more endur\u00ading and influ\u00aden\u00adtial work by female artists and design\u00aders than almost any art school in ear\u00adly twen\u00adti\u00adeth-cen\u00adtu\u00adry Europe.<\/p>\n

Among the almost 500 women who stud\u00adied at the Bauhaus, the film pro\u00adfiles fig\u00adures like Alma Busch\u00ader, \u201cwho cre\u00adat\u00aded pro\u00adto\u00adtypes of avant-garde fur\u00adni\u00adture and toys\u201d; \u201cvision\u00adary met\u00adal\u00adsmith and design\u00ader\u201d Mar\u00adi\u00adanne Brandt; Gun\u00adta St\u00f6l\u00adzl, whose \u201cweav\u00ading rev\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion\u00adized mod\u00adern tex\u00adtile design\u201d (weav\u00ading even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly being the main pro\u00adgram to which women were admit\u00adted); Friedl Dick\u00ader, a \u201cmul\u00adti\u00adtal\u00adent\u00aded artist\u201d ded\u00adi\u00adcat\u00aded to the Bauhaus; and Lucia Moholy, whose \u201cexcep\u00adtion\u00adal pho\u00adtographs still influ\u00adence how we view Bauhaus design today.\u201d The school itself may have shut down in 1933, owing to the con\u00adflict between its aes\u00adthet\u00adic and polit\u00adi\u00adcal ends and those of the ris\u00ading Nazi Par\u00adty, but the for\u00adward-look\u00ading nature and world\u00adwide cul\u00adtur\u00adal influ\u00adence of the Bauhaus have ensured that we still feel the influ\u00adence of its alum\u00adni, male and female alike.<\/p>\n
