if retirement is a long way off, or just a couple of years away &#8211; our handy guide below should help you understand how National Insurance contributions affect the amount of State Pension you will be paid.<\/p>\n<p>How to get any New State Pension payment<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">You will need at least 10 qualifying years on your National Insurance record to qualify for any State Pension, but they don\u2019t have to be 10 qualifying years in a row.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">This means for 10 years at least one or more of the following applied to you:<\/p>\n<p>you were working and paid National Insurance contributionsyou were getting National Insurance credits for example if you were unemployed, ill, a parent or a careryou were paying voluntary National Insurance contributions<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">If you have lived or worked abroad you might still be able to get some New State Pension.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">You might also qualify if you have paid married women\u2019s or widow\u2019s reduced rate contributions &#8211; means the maximum amount of New State Pension a person can receive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">You will need around 35 qualifying years to receive the full New State Pension if you do not have a National Insurance record before 6 April 2016 &#8211; You may still get a qualifying year if you earn between \u00a3123 and \u00a3242 a week from one employer &#8211; find out more <a aria-label=\"here.Link opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/national-insurance-rates-letters\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Qualifying years if you are not working<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">You may get National Insurance credits if you cannot work &#8211; for example because of illness or disability, or if you\u2019re a carer or you\u2019re unemployed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">You can get National Insurance credits if you:<\/p>\n<p>claim Child Benefit for a child under 12 (or under 16 before 2010)get Jobseeker\u2019s Allowance or Employment and Support Allowancereceive Carer\u2019s AllowanceIf you are not working or getting National Insurance credits<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">You might be able to pay voluntary National Insurance contributions if you\u2019re not in one of these groups but want to increase your State Pension amount. You can get a <a aria-label=\"State Pension statementLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/voluntary-national-insurance-contributions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">State Pension statement<\/a> which will tell you how much State Pension you may get.
