{"id":424163,"date":"2026-02-13T20:11:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-13T20:11:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/424163\/"},"modified":"2026-02-13T20:11:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T20:11:07","slug":"love-in-a-cold-climate-winter-olympic-village-runs-out-of-condoms-after-three-days-winter-olympics-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/424163\/","title":{"rendered":"Love in a cold climate: Winter Olympic village runs out of condoms after three days | Winter Olympics 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Free condoms for competitors at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/winter-olympics\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Winter Olympics<\/a> have run out within a record-breaking three days, according to La Stampa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe supplies ran out in just three days,\u201d an anonymous athlete told the Italian newspaper. \u201cThey promised us more will arrive, but who knows when.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It blamed the Olympic organisers, saying they had not been \u201cparticularly generous with the numbers\u201d. \u201cIn Paris the athletes received 300,000 condoms \u2013 two per day each \u2013 but the numbers for these Winter Games were significantly lower: not even 10,000,\u201d La Stampa\u2019s report states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Just under 3,000 athletes are competing at the Winter Olympics, compared to around 10,500 in the Paris Games two years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Last week the governor of the Lombardy region, Attilio Fontana, insisted the topic should not be a cause of embarrassment. \u201cYes, we provide free condoms to athletes in the Olympic village,\u201d he said in a social media post. \u201cIf this seems strange to some, they\u2019re unaware of the established Olympic practice. It began in Seoul 1988 to raise awareness among athletes and young people about sexually transmitted disease prevention\u2014 a topic that shouldn\u2019t cause embarrassment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Fontana also shared a Instagram post by the Spanish figure skater Olivia Smart, in which she showed her followers condoms stamped with the yellow Lombardy Region logo. \u201cI found them,\u201d she says in the clip, which has gone viral. \u201cThey have everything you need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">There are plenty of other activities to keep athletes busy in the Olympic village, including a large gym, table football and air hockey games and even a piano.
