The Munich Security Conference began today with a meeting of European leaders discussing the war.<\/p>\n

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the main focus “was on the situation in our energy sector and our reconstruction”.<\/p>\n

Sir Keir Starmer was supposed to be seated next to Marco Rubio, but the US secretary of state hadn’t arrived by the time the press left the room.<\/p>\n

The Financial Times is reporting that Rubio skipped the meeting, but a US official has since said he will meet Zelenskyy tomorrow.<\/p>\n

On the sidelines of the conference, our security and defence editor Deborah Haynes<\/a> held a panel discussion.<\/p>\n

We heard from foreign ministers from the UK, Ukraine, France and the Netherlands as well as a Democratic Senator, and the underlying theme was that the US needs to be involved for security guarantees in Ukraine to work.<\/p>\n

Ukraine’s foreign minister Andrii Sybiha said “Ukrainian security is transatlantic security” and warned that without Donald Trump, it’s unrealistic to end the war;France’s foreign minister Jean-Noel Barrot warned “time is playing against the Russian nation”;Meanwhile, UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper didn’t rule out UK troops seizing Russian shadow fleet vessels in the future;Dutch foreign minister David van Weel said security guarantees “won’t work” without the US;And US Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen urged Trump to “ensure there is a price to pay” for Putin.<\/p>\n

At the Winter Olympics, the Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych’s appeal for reinstatement to the Games.<\/p>\n

He was due to compete at the Winter Olympics yesterday, but was banned in the 11th hour over his helmet depicting more than 20 Ukrainian athletes and coaches killed since Russia’s invasion.<\/p>\n

Heraskevych since told Reuters that the Court of Arbitration for Sport “has failed us”.<\/p>\n
