Navalny died<\/a> in a Russian penal colony in February 2024. The Russian authorities said he died of natural causes.<\/p>\n

But poisoning was \u201chighly likely the cause of his death,\u201d the five countries said in a joint statement<\/a> on Saturday. Sky News reported<\/a> that British scientists from Porton Down, the U.K.\u2019s top secret laboratory, played a key role in the findings.<\/p>\n

Navalny, a longtime thorn in the side<\/a> of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was filmed<\/a> the day before his death at a court hearing cracking jokes and seemingly in high spirits.<\/p>\n

Yulia Navalnaya, his widow<\/a>, announced the finding at a press conference Saturday at the Munich Security Conference, alongside foreign ministers from the European countries.<\/p>\n

The U.K., in a separate statement, said that the circumstances of Navalny\u2019s death were \u201cbrutal and barbaric.\u201d\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

The five countries\u2019 representatives to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons have written to its Director General to inform him of the alleged Russian breach of the Chemical Weapons Convention, the countries said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The U.K. said Navalny\u2019s death is part of an \u201calarming pattern\u201d of behavior by Russia, including its use of Novichok in the U.K. in 2018, which led to the death of a British woman, and Russian troops\u2019 \u201cfrequent use of chemical weapons on the battlefield in Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n
