So, unless I drag my two young daughters with me, running outside is not often an option.<\/p>\n<p>However, I might have found a solution: an at-home treadmill.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m optimistic that using this will help me run more regularly, but I still feel like I need guidance on how to make my running habit stick.<\/p>\n<p>I spoke with Samuel Westcott from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/track.webgains.com\/click.html?wgcampaignid=162949&amp;wgprogramid=5503&amp;clickref=fitandwell-gb-3873815577866164300&amp;wgtarget=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.runnersneed.com%2F\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.runnersneed.com\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" rel=\"sponsored noopener nofollow\" data-hl-processed=\"hawklinks\" data-placeholder-url=\"https:\/\/track.webgains.com\/click.html?wgcampaignid=162949&amp;wgprogramid=5503&amp;clickref=hawk-custom-tracking&amp;wgtarget=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.runnersneed.com%2F\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\" data-merchant-name=\"Runners Need\" data-merchant-id=\"1280\" data-merchant-network=\"WebGains\" data-merchant-url=\"runnersneed.com\">Runners Need<\/a>, a former qualified run leader for England Athletics, to get his advice.<\/p>\n<p>What is the best way to start running if you are a beginner?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirstly, remove all preconceived expectations of what running is for you,\u201d says Westcott.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no minimum. There is no maximum. Experiment. See what you can do,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>That might mean running for five minutes at a time, going really slowly, or playing around with the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fitandwell.com\/features\/run-walk-run-method\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.fitandwell.com\/features\/run-walk-run-method\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">run-walk-run method<\/a> to find something that suits you.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRunning should be fun. It\u2019s hard, but it is innate. Limit your expectations and just enjoy running for what it gives you. Running is unique and your relationship with it should be, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What kind of warm-up should I do? <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalking before running on a treadmill is great preparation, but before anything: stretch,\u201d says Westcott. \u201cDynamic stretches and static stretches are a great low-intensity warm-up, which prepares the muscles for sport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You could try doing simple <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=difYoBtZi2s\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=difYoBtZi2s\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">leg swings<\/a>, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fitandwell.com\/how-to\/squats\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.fitandwell.com\/how-to\/squats\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">squats<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/rbe-f6X6I_M?si=zCiJXZtkQIDgQ3TC\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/rbe-f6X6I_M?si=zCiJXZtkQIDgQ3TC\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">calf raises<\/a>, alongside some moderately-paced walking before your run.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever you do, Westcott cautions against skipping your warm-up, as it can lead to a sluggish start.<\/p>\n<p>How should you cool down?<\/p>\n<p>Westcott suggests focusing on static stretches when you cool down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink of cooling down like meditation. Start from the top in your head, calm yourself down, roll your neck, then your shoulders, then your arms, hips, glutes, thighs, calves and feet,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>The aim is to lower your heart rate slowly back to a normal resting state and to stretch muscles across your whole body, so that you stay limber throughout the day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAway from stretches, replenishing the fluids and calories lost during exercise is also highly important,\u201d says Westcott.<\/p>\n<p>How does running outdoors compare with treadmill running?<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to deal with extreme weather and hilly inclines when running indoors, but Westcott says treadmill running presents its own challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRunning on a treadmill is hard and usually a lot hotter than outside,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.22%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/4xjCeRHC8yTHguR3fmtY78.jpg\" alt=\"A woman runs on a treadmill in a living room. Go slower, take pauses and listen to your body.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTreadmill speed does not always correlate to outside running, so just go off what seems right to you. Set the pace at something which seems comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What kind of kit does a beginner need to run?<\/p>\n<p>There are two essential items that every runner should own, according to Westcott.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need a pair of shoes and a pair of good socks. For me, this is the bare minimum,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>He also suggests avoiding cotton clothing, especially T-shirts, for runs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA thin sweat-wicking T-shirt and running shorts will make your experience a lot more enjoyable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How can I avoid injury during my run?<\/p>\n<p>Westcott says eating the right kinds of food can help your runs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn a hot day, drinking water and maybe some electrolytes will reduce the risk of cramping. Gels, bars and sometimes carb mixes can improve running efficiency and stave off any mid-run energy crashes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also says it\u2019s important to keep tabs on your perceived effort during a run, to make sure you\u2019re not pushing yourself too much.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe body has an incredible way of letting you know if things are getting too hard. Listen to that voice!
