There\u2019s a good chance that you\u2019ve told a friend you love reading because you\u2019re an introvert, or apologised for being late because you\u2019re a Type B<\/a>.<\/p>\n But scientists from the UK and Germany<\/a> have unveiled four new personality types for people to fall into \u2013 how they use AI <\/a>chatbots. <\/p>\n The study, published in The International Journal on Networked Business<\/a>, identified four types of ChatGPT <\/a>users from a survey of 344 people. <\/p>\n Every person, from those who lazily ask ChatGPT to write an email to the experts using it to chat to dolphins<\/a>, falls into at least one of them. <\/p>\n What are the four personality types of ChatGPT users?<\/p>\n One type is the tech-savvy AI enthusiast, who made up 25.6% of the participants. <\/p>\n These people quickly embraced ChatGPT, even though it had only been around for four months or so when the survey took place in 2020.<\/p>\n Study author Christoph Gerling tells Metro: \u2018This might be a marketing executive who treats ChatGPT as a senior peer \u2013 engaging in deep, multi-turn dialogues to refine global campaign strategies and valuing the \u201cAI\u2019s judgment\u201d.\u2019<\/p>\n AI enthusiasts may also be a bit of a show-off by using AI to maintain their reputation in the office as an \u2018innovation leader\u2019, the research associate at Berlin<\/a>\u2019s Alexander\u00a0von\u00a0Humboldt\u00a0Institute for\u00a0Internet\u00a0and Society adds.<\/p>\n \t\t \u2018Na\u00efve pragmatists\u2019, meanwhile, are the ultimate solution hunters, who made up 20.6% of those surveyed. <\/p>\n The paper said this group prioritise getting things done, both on and offline, with little interest in how that\u2019s achieved. <\/p>\n \u2018This might be a young professional who uses ChatGPT as a Swiss Army knife for mundane tasks such as recipe suggestions or gift ideas, rarely questioning information sources or limitations,\u2019 Gerling says.<\/p>\n A third category, Cautious Adopters, is the largest group at 35.5% of participants.<\/p>\n \t\t Researchers described them as people who try to balance the pros and the cons in life, including when it comes to new-fangled tech like AI.<\/p>\n \u2018This might be a small business owner who experiments with ChatGPT for drafting customer communications, but only adopts it after observing peers\u2019 success,\u2019 Gerling says.<\/p>\n Reserved explorers, finally, are just dipping their toes in AI. They\u2019re the fewest in number, at just 18.3%, but are the most apprehensive.<\/p>\n These worrywarts do want to understand the hype around virtual assistants, but are, well, worried about their data and privacy. <\/p>\n Gerling says: \u2018This might be a tech-sceptical older adult who tries ChatGPT to see whether it can explain a complex news topic, finds the result acceptable, but does not perceive it as a significant improvement over a traditional search engine.\u2019<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\tWhich personality type are you?<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\tStay up to date with the stories everybody\u2019s talking about by signing up to Metro’s News Updates newsletter.<\/p>\n The findings are less about the actual personalities of the ChatGPT users and more about what drew them to make an account to begin with.<\/p>\n \t\t As Gerling explains, if you do use AI chatbots, you probably fall somewhere between these four personality types.<\/p>\n This includes his co-author, Oxford<\/a> AI lecturer Dr Fabian Braesemann<\/a>, who says he\u2019s between an AI Enthusiast and a Na\u00efve Pragmatist.<\/p>\n Dr Braesemann says: \u2018I focus on optimising prompts based on the structure of human thinking, having completely weaned myself off social pleasantries that I would normally use when addressing people.<\/p>\n \u2018Furthermore, I lack the loyalty typical of an Enthusiast; in true Pragmatist fashion, I switch the moment a cheaper or more powerful tool appears.<\/p>\n \u2018Essentially, your personality \u2013 specifically your need for control versus your curiosity \u2013 determines whether you embrace the tool or keep it at arm\u2019s length.\u2019<\/p>\n How has AI changed over the last few years?<\/p>\n A lot has changed in the six years since the survey when it comes to AI, with it now able to book flights on your behalf <\/a>or generate lifelike images.<\/p>\n \t\t As much as general-purpose chatbots are still just sophisticated next-word calculators, many users have an \u2019emotional\u2019 relationship<\/a> to them.<\/p>\n Metro has heard from children who consider AI as a friend<\/a>, teens who treat them like therapists <\/a>and adults who rely on them like doctors<\/a>. <\/p>\n There are even AI companionship apps, which are personalised chatbots that simulate partners<\/a>, celebrities or fictional characters. <\/p>\n Still, Brasemann says, most people see AI tools as just that, tools.
