{"id":428075,"date":"2026-02-16T03:47:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-16T03:47:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/428075\/"},"modified":"2026-02-16T03:47:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T03:47:08","slug":"eu-foreign-policy-chief-criticises-fashionable-euro-bashing-by-us-european-union","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/428075\/","title":{"rendered":"EU foreign policy chief criticises \u2018fashionable euro-bashing\u2019 by US | European Union"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The EU\u2019s foreign policy chief has denied claims levelled by the US that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/europe-news\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Europe<\/a> is facing civilisational erasure, rejecting what she condemned as \u201cfashionable euro-bashing\u201d by Washington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Kaja Kallas also said the US was discovering that it could not settle the war in Ukraine without Europe\u2019s involvement and consent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Her remarks capped a difficult three-day Munich Security Conference attended by world leaders and security officials in which the health of the transatlantic alliance, a stronger European pillar inside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/nato\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nato<\/a>, and the Ukraine peace talks dominated discussions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In his speech on Saturday, the US secretary of state, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/marco-rubio\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marco Rubio<\/a>, laced a more diplomatic tone with a firm message that Washington would only work alongside Europe if it changed to accommodate US leadership on mass migration, free trade and greater European defence spending.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"'A conditional offer to cooperate with Europe': Patrick Wintour on Marco Rubio's speech\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1771213628_502_1000.jpg\" height=\"259\" width=\"460\" class=\"dcr-1qi2at0\"\/>&#8216;A conditional offer to cooperate with Europe&#8217;: Patrick Wintour on Marco Rubio&#8217;s speech<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Kallas, speaking on the last day of the conference, suggested some of Rubio\u2019s remarks were directed at a domestic audience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cEuro-bashing\u201d was now \u201cvery fashionable\u201d despite all \u201cthe good things that Europe actually has to offer,\u201d Kallas said. \u201cWhen I travel around the world, I see countries that look up to us because we represent values \u200b\u200bthat are still highly regarded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cContrary to what some may say, woke, decadent Europe is not facing civilisational erasure. In fact, people still want to join our club, and not just fellow Europeans. In Canada, I was told over 40% of Canadians have an interest in joining the EU.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">She challenged the US criticism of media freedom in Europe, pointing out that her own country, Estonia, ranked second in the world press freedom index and the US 58th. Given the EU\u2019s record on human rights, she said, she found some of the criticisms very hard to take.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe are, you know, pushing humanity forward, trying to defend human rights and all this, which is actually bringing also prosperity for people. So that\u2019s why it\u2019s very hard for me to believe these accusations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Kallas, a fierce opponent of Russia, has repeatedly clashed with the Trump administration. She said she did not think the EU was ready to give Ukraine a date for membership, suggesting accession as early as 2027 is unrealistic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The previous day, Rubio made an emotional but highly conditional offer of a new partnership, insisting the two continents belonged together and describing America as \u201ca child of Europe\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In a much-anticipated speech, he said the US was intent on building a new world order, adding: \u201cWhile we are prepared, if necessary, to do this alone, it is our preference and it is our hope to do this together with you, our friends here in Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Admitting the Americans may come across as a little direct and urgent, he said this was only because the US was profoundly concerned by the fate of Europe and knew their destinies were intertwined.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Rubio travelled to Bratislava in Slovakia after the conference where he skirted around why the US intelligence agencies had not been involved in the report prepared by five European intelligence agencies, including the UK\u2019s, that found the Russian opposition leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/feb\/14\/alexei-navalny-poisoning-death-russia-frog-toxin\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alexei Navalny had been poisoned<\/a>. They coordinated that. We chose \u2013 doesn\u2019t mean we disagree with the outcome. We just, it wasn\u2019t our endeavour.
