Storm Floris<\/a>, the first rough weather<\/a> front of the summer, has hit the British Isles this morning.<\/p>\n The Met Office<\/a> named the storm<\/a>, which is expected to hit with 90mph gusts, as it issued two yellow weather warnings.<\/p>\n Follow the latest updates on Storm Floris with Metro\u2019s live blog<\/a><\/p>\n An amber weather warning is in place for the majority of Scotland between 10am and 10pm.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tSign up for all of the latest stories\t\t\t<\/p>\n Start your day informed with Metro’s News Updates<\/a> newsletter or get Breaking News<\/a> alerts the moment it happens. <\/p>\n The worst of the weather is set to land in the north of England<\/a>, Scotland<\/a>, north Wales <\/a>and Northern Ireland<\/a>, where buildings could be damaged and flying debris is a risk, the forecaster warned.<\/p>\n Train operator LNER has warned passengers not to travel north of Newcastle and Avanti West Coast has told people not to travel north of Preston on Monday as a result of the forecast.<\/p>\n The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo performance scheduled for today has been cancelled because of the weather.<\/p>\n Read on for more details about where the summer storm will touch down today.<\/p>\n Where will Storm Floris hit? <\/p>\n Storm Floris will bring \u2018unseasonably strong and potentially disruptive winds\u2019 through today and into early Tuesday, the Met Office said.<\/p>\n \t\t The yellow weather warning is in force from 6am until a minute before midnight.<\/p>\n From 10am, it will be joined by an amber wind warning for much of mainland Scotland, the Inner Hebrides and the Western Isles lasting until 10pm.<\/p>\n The Met Office warns of a potential danger to life from \u2018large waves and beach material being thrown\u2019 in coastal parts of the country.<\/p>\n \t\t Dan Suri, a Met Office Chief Meteorologist, said: \u2018Much of Scotland is likely to see gusts of 50-70mph with more than 80mph on some exposed coasts, hills and bridges.<\/p>\n \u2018Western coastal areas will see the highest gusts late morning, with the strongest winds transferring to northeastern Scotland by late afternoon. <\/p>\n \u2018Across the wider yellow warning area, many inland areas are likely to see gusts of 40-50mph, with 60mph likely at higher elevations and around some exposed coasts.\u2019<\/p>\n Follow the storm as it heads towards the UK with our live tracker below.<\/p>\n People in the yellow weather warning area might want to prepare for power cuts and check in on vulnerable loved ones, as outages could have a knock-on effect on mobile phone coverage<\/a>.<\/p>\n Some roads and bridges, especially those in exposed areas, might have to close as the storm sweeps in.<\/p>\n Road, rail<\/a>, air and ferry journeys could also see longer journeys and cancellations.<\/p>\n The UK has seen a long stretch of sunny weather in recent weeks. <\/p>\n However, storms are not as uncommon in the summer as you might think \u2013 there was Storm Lilian <\/a>in August last year, Antoni <\/a>and Betty in August 2023, and storms Ellen and Francis in August 2020.<\/p>\n Storm Floris is the sixth named storm of the 2024\/25 season<\/a> after the destruction from Storm \u00c9owyn in January, when red warnings were issued and at least two people died<\/a>.<\/p>\n Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@metro.co.uk<\/a>.<\/p>\n For more stories like this, check our news page<\/a>.<\/p>\n \t\t\tComments Arrow Arrow![\"Metro](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754299091_754_SEI_260834743-e9f7.jpg\")
