In response to rising costs and dwindling chip supplies, Sony is considering pushing back the release of its next PlayStation console \u201cto 2028 or even 2029,\u201d according to industry sources <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-02-15\/rampant-ai-demand-for-memory-is-fueling-a-growing-chip-crisis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cited by Bloomberg<\/a>, while Nintendo may increase the $450 price of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/nintendo\/686603\/nintendo-switch-2-review\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Switch 2 console<\/a> this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">That delay would be a considerable divergence from Sony\u2019s usual release schedule, having launched a new console generation every six to seven years since the original PlayStation debuted in 1994. As the current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/21550146\/sony-playstation-5-ps5-review\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PlayStation 5<\/a> console was released in November 2020, it would have been expected to launch before the end of 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The memory shortages are also a blow for Nintendo, which pointedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/nintendo\/717611\/nintendo-switch-price-increase-risk-safety\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">did not increase the Switch 2 launch price<\/a> last year despite Trump\u2019s sweeping tariffs. Bloomberg offers no specifics for how much the price might increase.
