The man who died in what was described as an attempted police stop has been pictured in tributes left at the scene. Lain Estridge, 23, died following an incident on Back Falkner Street in Liverpool’s Georgian Quarter<\/a> at around 3.15pm on Friday February 13.<\/p>\n Merseyside Police<\/a>, which has not formally named Mr Estridge, said “after coming off his pedal cycle the man collided with a police van, which was stationary at the time.” The force has not provided further information about the “proactive police operation” that resulted in the attempt to stop Mr Estridge or about the nature of the attempted stop itself. The force referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) following the incident.<\/p>\n A spokesperson added the force was “co-operating fully” with the police watchdog probe<\/a>. They added: “Our thoughts and condolences are with his family.”<\/p>\n The ECHO has approached the IOPC for more information regarding the nature of the incident.<\/p>\n Mr Estridge was named locally on Sunday by people in the Liverpool 8 area<\/a>. Dozens of tributes were left in his memory on Grove Street. Bouquets of flowers<\/a>, candles and bottles of Captain Morgan spiced rum and Magnum tonic wine were left by friends and family.<\/p>\n Floral tributes on Grove Street, Toxteth(Image: Liverpool ECHO)<\/p>\n An accompanying note on one bouquet of flowers read: “Love you Lizzy. Ball in paradise.” A number of pictures of Mr Estridge posing with loved ones were also left attached to the railing.<\/p>\n Pictures taken by the ECHO<\/a> on Friday night showed an extensive police cordon which remained in place for large parts of the weekend. The initial cordon was established on Grove Street at its junction with Falkner Street, while an additional cordon was marked by red tape.<\/p>\n A bike could be seen inside the cordon<\/a>, surrounded by medical equipment. Forensic officers from the force’s scientific support unit later put the bike into an evidence bag to remove from the scene.<\/p>\n One witness, who spoke to the ECHO at the scene on Friday, said: “There was a small ambulance working on him, he was on the floor. There were a lot of people and a lot of police so I couldn\u2019t see much of what was happening. I just noticed all the police and thought that looked serious.”<\/p>\n Floral tributes on Grove Street, Toxteth(Image: Liverpool ECHO)<\/p>\n A spokesperson for the IOPC told the ECHO<\/a> on Monday: “An independent investigation is under way into the actions of Merseyside Police following an incident in Liverpool<\/a> on Friday afternoon. We were advised by the force that officers were following a man on a bike at around 3.15pm.<\/p>\n “The man, aged in his 20s, has come off his bike and made contact with a police van, which was not moving at the time.
