Was it obvious way back in indie\u2019s 2000s revival just how globally conquering massive Arctic Monkeys<\/a> would become?<\/p>\n They certainly landed with impact. While the glut of landfill indie mugging for NME\u2019s attention was already beginning to wobble into derivativeness, it felt like a long time since the UK had witnessed a debut single so effortlessly confident.<\/p>\n Dropped in 2005 amid an MTV2 carousel of The Kooks and Razorlight\u2019s Topman bollocks, \u2018I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor\u2019 burst with vitality in comparison, flexing razor hooks, lyrical smarts far beyond frontman Alex Turner\u2019s 19 years of age, and that essential Sheffield accent that seemed to trigger a horde of imitators for years to come.<\/p>\n Such was the intense press attention that many wondered if the hype would fall flat upon their second single. Doubts were quashed when \u2018When the Sun Goes Down\u2019 saw the light of day three months later, presaging the massive anticipation for Arctic Monkeys\u2019 debut, Whatever People Say I Am, That\u2019s What I\u2019m Not, heralded as possessing the same British cultural essentiality as prior landmark debuts, Definitely Maybe or The Stone Roses debut.<\/p>\n Yet, like Oasis or the \u2018Fool\u2019s Gold\u2019 conjurors, Arctic Monkeys didn\u2019t quite crack America, remaining a staple UK act and only scoring the most committed Anglophiles and indie musos\u2019 playlists and heavy rotations across the Atlantic. Until AM that is. Released in 2013, the new rock and roll riffs, swaggering leather, and infinitely more sexy lyrical pen truly marked Turner and the lads as an outfit of international stature, \u2018R U Mine?<\/a>\u2019 and \u2018Do I Wanna Know\u2019 their defining anthems for many fans over in the States.<\/p>\n Naturally, it might not come as much surprise that Turner expressed fondness for AM\u2019s numbers over the years. Speaking to Zane Lowe, the Arctic Monkeys frontman selected \u2018Knee Socks\u2019 as the mooted favourite cut from his band, complimenting Queens of the Stone Age captain Josh Homme as key to pulling the group \u201cout of a little rut\u201d, a favour Turner would return by appearing on Queens of the Stone Age\u2019s \u2026Like Clockwork.<\/p>\n An AM cut pops up in an NME interview around the time, Turner celebrating \u00a0\u2018Arabella\u2019s lyrical work before reaching 2009\u2019s Humbug and highlighting the breezy \u2018Cornerstone\u2019 for its \u201cconcise\u201d execution.<\/p>\n Another Arctic Monkeys piece that met Turner\u2019s expectations was revealed as recently as 2023. Appearing on John Kennedy\u2019s Track by Track Podcast for Radio X, The Car\u2019s pithy closer \u2018Perfect Sense\u2019 sprang to Turner\u2019s mind when considering the Arctic Monkeys\u2019 grade-A material, taking pride in its easy, intuitive genesis during the album\u2019s sessions, sonically a far cry from the previous LP effort, Tranquillity Base Hotel & Casino<\/a>\u2019s lush psychedelic splash.<\/p>\n \u201cThis one is the closest thing we had to, you know, written in an afternoon,\u201d Turner reveals. \u201cKind of really came together quite quickly. And it\u2019s probably one of the favourites on there\u2026 it came together quite quickly and without a great deal of thought.
