While their on-screen romance is pretty dramatic, Van Patten and White have talked about how much they rely on one another when the cameras are off. Here\u2019s their complete relationship timeline so far.<\/p>\n

Tell Me Lies began production in 2022, and the couple met during the show\u2019s audition process. As soon as the show premiered in September, fans noticed the chemistry between the leads and wondered if they might really be dating. That month, the pair walked the red carpet together for a Tell Me Lies red carpet screening event for the first time.<\/p>\n

They also spoke with E!<\/a> about filming sex scenes with an intimacy coordinator.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s really amazing that we had our intimacy coordinator who really just discussed everything and created such a safe environment for us,\u201d the actress said. \u201cBecause the scenes are very, very intimate.\u201d<\/p>\n She added, \u201cWe were on the same page.\u201d<\/p>\n White shared, \u201cIt\u2019s not treated as this big, scary thing. It\u2019s just another scene that we have to block out and that we have to figure out beforehand.\u201d<\/p>\n October 2022<\/p>\n Beginning in October, the couple went from hinting at a relationship to confirming one. On October 13, they were seen at the Ralph Lauren spring\/summer 2023 fashion show and then the Giambattista Valli dinner.<\/p>\n Michael Buckner – Getty Images<\/p>\n They also starred in a Bulgari commercial together.<\/p>\n A few weeks later, Van Patten was asked on E!\u2019s The Rundown<\/a> if White was her IRL crush. She replied, \u201cYes. Biggest crush ever.\u201d<\/p>\n While talking to Entertainment Tonight\u2019s Deidre Behar that month, she was playful about the dating rumors.<\/p>\n \u201cFans should just leave it up for mystery, keep it fun. Who knows?\u201d she said<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s so fun getting to do all of this together. It\u2019s just great. We never stop hanging out with the cast. We hang out all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n But White got serious on the Not Skinny But Not Fat<\/a> podcast, saying, \u201cAll I\u2019m saying is that I\u2019m obsessed with her [Van Patten] because she\u2019s fucking amazing. Our lives are built in together, we have so much to do together. I hope it happens…I have a huge crush on her.\u201d<\/p>\n In another interview that month, White credited<\/a> Van Patten for helping him on set.<\/p>\n \u201cStephen is so intense, so manipulative, so crazy at times that I had a hard time being that guy,\u201d he said of identifying with his character. \u201cThen when they cut, I would have to be myself, and that was really hard for me. Grace was so good about compartmentalizing the character and herself, and I just tried to follow that. She\u2019s the best.\u201d<\/p>\n November 2022<\/p>\n White shared a picture of him and Van Patten in a photo booth, seeming to block out a kissing photo with an emoji.<\/p>\n Instagram<\/p>\n Van Patten then shared a photo of them touching tongues on her timeline, writing in the caption, \u201c\u2026just in the lick of time.\u201d<\/p>\n They made their red carpet debut as a couple at the 2022 CFDA Awards in New York.<\/p>\n Jason Mendez – Getty Images<\/p>\n January 2023<\/p>\n They shared a mirror selfie of themselves with a dog.<\/p>\n Instagram<\/p>\n February 2023<\/p>\n The couple shared a photo of themselves in matching Waffle House hoodies and joked about getting married in them.<\/p>\n Instagram<\/p>\n March 2023<\/p>\n Van Patten wished White a happy birthday in her Instagram Stories.<\/p>\n Instagram<\/p>\n She later shared a photo of White working on a car with the caption, \u201cFix me.\u201d<\/p>\n Instagram<\/p>\n January 2024<\/p>\n White\u2019s mother, Katey Sagal, was interviewed on Rachel Bilson\u2019s Broad Ideas<\/a> podcast and shared a little bit about her son\u2019s relationship.<\/p>\n \u201cMy son is on a television show, and his girlfriend is the lead [too]. They play love interests, and [they are dating in real life]. They have been for two years,\u201d she shared, adding that they had been dating \u201csince the audition.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThey had such great chemistry,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n August 2024<\/p>\n Van Patten told Only Natural Diamonds<\/a> in an interview that she was \u201cnervous\u201d about filming season two.<\/p>\n \u201cI was super nervous because he knows me better than anyone, and I know him pretty damn well,\u201d she said. \u201cMy nervousness came from he\u2019s going to know when I\u2019m acting. He\u2019s going to know when I\u2019m being bad, and he\u2019s going to be like, \u2018Nope, that\u2019s not how you do it.\u2019 But also, I have never felt so safe and comfortable, like being able to try things.\u201d<\/p>\n She continued, \u201cAnd we work so well together, and I love working with him not just because he\u2019s my boyfriend but because he\u2019s so talented and giving and present.\u201d<\/p>\n On August 31, they attended the US Open together in New York City.<\/p>\n Gotham – Getty Images<\/p>\n September 2024<\/p>\n While talking to People<\/a>, Van Patten said it was \u201ctrippy\u201d to work with White now \u201cbecause we are together in real life, and he knows me better than anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n White agreed, adding, \u201cIt was super weird. It was hard. It was like, we put these people away for a while, [so] taking them back out was a little hard but really fun. We knew exactly how to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n They were very clear, however, that their relationship is nothing like Stephen and Lucy\u2019s.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re wildly different, thank goodness,\u201d Van Patten said. \u201cI love Stephen and Lucy\u2019s dynamic. Each scene is so loaded and so tense.\u201d<\/p>\n She reiterated that to E!<\/a>, saying, \u201cBecause we established that dynamic first season, the second season was a lot easier to switch on and off. And we\u2019re so different from these characters, so it\u2019s honestly just an opportunity to get all of our bad feelings out so that there\u2019s none left by the time we go home.\u201d<\/p>\n And White told Decider<\/a>, \u201cAs for the relationship influencing the role\u2014it helps because you\u2019re so comfortable with someone. So you can go and feel free to try stuff, and there\u2019s not a politeness to it. It\u2019s just very all out there.\u201d<\/p>\n The couple has not been seen photographed together since the show\u2019s premiere and have not been posting much to social media.<\/p>\n August 2025<\/p>\n White attended the premiere of The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox as Van Patten\u2019s date at the New York Historical Society on August 19. It feels really special.\u201d<\/p>\n Of season 3 of Tell Me Lies, she stated, \u201cIt\u2019s the peak of all of these people\u2019s worst decisions, so get ready!\u201d<\/p>\n October 2025<\/p>\n In the October 1 episode of Call Her Daddy<\/a>, Van Patten recalled meeting White for the first time over a Zoom call for a Tell Me Lies chemistry read. She admitted that she \u201cdidn\u2019t like\u201d him, saying, \u201cJackson, I had heard was the favorite. And he gets on, and\u2014I\u2019ve told him this\u2014I\u2019m like, \u2018Oh, this is like a serious actor, like, actor-y actor. So I was just like, \u2018Ugh, God.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n But she knew he was right for the role of Stephen DeMarco, who would play opposite her character, Lucy Albright. \u201cI was like, \u2018Alright. It\u2019s fine. Maybe we won\u2019t get along. But, like, he\u2019s perfect for the part, and he\u2019s so talented and great,\u2019\u201d she continued. She added that she was happy to have found an on-screen counterpart, but \u201ckinda rolled my eyes a little bit.\u201d<\/p>\n When they met in person, Van Patten noticed a \u201ccompletely different energy\u201d between them, and White admitted that he was nervous during their initial Zoom meeting.<\/p>\n \u201cWe all had dinner, and we vibed instantly,\u201d she said. \u201cWe were both like, we both have a crush on each other. This is probably the worst thing that could happen. And we sat on a stoop for I think, like, six hours and talked about every reason why we should not act on this. And then I kissed him.\u201d<\/p>\n She went on to say that filming with her real-life boyfriend made certain scenes, specifically intimate moments, \u201cso much easier.\u201d She explained that \u201cso much of the weirdness\u201d with shooting sex scenes is not knowing the person you\u2019re acting with, but being with White made it \u201cso much safer and comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n On October 18, the couple walked the red carpet at the 5th annual Academy Museum Gala. First, she shared about how they stay connected on set.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve had the same schedule for the past four years. When we\u2019re working, it\u2019s lined up. When we\u2019re not working, it\u2019s lined up,\u201d Van Patten said. \u201cIt\u2019s been really nice to go through that with someone, having the same anxieties and talking each other through it. We both handle it in different ways, but it\u2019s the same anxiety.\u201d<\/p>\n She continued, \u201cOur approach to [our relationship] is we\u2019re not going to flaunt anything and we\u2019re not going to hide anything. We\u2019re going to live our lives the way we would if we weren\u2019t on a show together because the second you start making those adjustments and accepting it, that\u2019s when I\u2019d start to feel really strange about life.\u201d<\/p>\n For Van Patten, it\u2019s important to live how she usually does.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s easy because even if we were never on the show together, I wouldn\u2019t be posting a million posts about my boyfriend,\u201d Van Patten said. \u201cI\u2019d so much rather be who I am and live my life how I live it and not adapt because now this part of me is under the microscope.\u201d<\/p>\n White shared a story from the early days of his relationship with Van Patten during a January 22 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show<\/a>. When Barrymore asked White about the \u201ccraziest thing\u201d he did to impress Van Patten before they started dating, he replied, \u201cYou know what it\u2019s like in the courtship phase? I let her tattoo me, like, all over my body.\u201d<\/p>\n Barrymore followed up by asking whether the tattoos were done \u201cwith a Sharpie\u2026or a stick and poke,\u201d to which White confirmed it was the latter. As he held his hand up to the camera, he said, \u201cLike [she did] all these hand tattoos,\u201d pointing out an \u201cx\u201d on his middle finger and an \u201co\u201d on his ring finger. He added, \u201cShe gave me some lightning bolts on my\u2026,\u201d before gesturing behind his ear. \u201cShe went crazy. And I wanted to do that. I love tattoos, but I was also like \u2018Yeah, do whatever you want. Here\u2019s my body. Go do it. I\u2019m your canvas.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n February 2026<\/p>\n Van Patten and White stepped out together during Grammys weekend, attending<\/a> Charli XCX and Saint Laurent\u2019s after-party at Bar Marmont on February 2.<\/p>\n Jerritt Clark – Getty Images<\/p>\n In a February 11 interview with The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>, Van Patten reflected on the intense fan response to Tell Me Lies\u2019 third season and opened up about navigating the spotlight alongside White.<\/p>\n On deciding how much of their real-life relationship to share while promoting this season, Van Patten explained, \u201cWe\u2019re just going with the flow. Life is first, for both of us. We both feel similarly that if we try and adapt for our jobs that it could start to maybe feel weird and inauthentic. We both want to feel free to be ourselves and put it out there as much as we feel is natural and not force it on people, but also not try so hard to keep it private. It\u2019s about a balance, and he is similar to me where he\u2019s also not hyper-social media obsessed, so we are on the same level. It\u2019s easy and luckily, we agree on all of that stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n As for Lucy and Stephen\u2019s trajectory heading into the finale, Van Patten shared, \u201cYou can predict Lucy is going to be hurt. You can predict Stephen is going to hurt her at some point. But the specifics of hurting her? No. I am surprised every time. I would never have guessed he would make her go on tape confessing [she lied about sexual assault]. He takes it really far, and the writing takes it really far.
