Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe<\/a> rider Maxim Van Gils will miss \u2018months\u2019 of racing, his team has said, after he fractured his pelvis in a finish-line crash at the Cl\u00e1sica Ja\u00e9n on Monday.<\/p>\n

The Belgian came down in the final meters of the Spanish one-day race, as he opened his sprint for second place against Tom Pidcock<\/a> (Pinarello<\/a>-Q36.5) and Jan Christen (UAE Team Emirates-XRG). Christen was later disqualified by the commissaires, having appeared to deviate to the left, veering towards the barriers and across Van Gils’s line.<\/p>\n

Afterwards, Van Gils was shown writhing in pain on the ground. He did not finish the race, which Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) won with a 55km solo attack. Pidcock finished second, while Wellens\u2019s new team-mate Beno\u00eet Cosnefroy placed third.<\/p>\n

A statement from Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe<\/a>, released on Monday evening, read: \u201cAfter today\u2019s crash, medical examinations confirmed that Maxim Van Gils has sustained a pelvic fracture.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaxim will miss the upcoming months of racing.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole team stands behind you, Maxim \u2013 every step of the way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Replying to the statement on X, UAE Team Emirates-XRG manager Joxean Fern\u00e1ndez Matxin wrote: \u201cOhhh so sorry, this is bad news\u2026!!!!! Wishing him a full recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n

Christen later issued an apology to Van Gils in his own Instagram post.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanna apologize to Maxim for today, I jumped for the slipstream of Tom when he starte[d] the sprint and did not see him coming on my left inside,\u201d Christen wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was an unfortunate incident, which can unfortunately happen in races. What I know for myself is that I would never put any other rider in harm like that on purpose.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of emotion in my head about the situation, and I just wish from my heart to Maxim a speedy recovery and hope I can compete with him for victory again in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to ProCyclingStats, Van Gils was due to compete in the Vuelta a Andaluc\u00eda, Milan-San Remo<\/a>, Tirreno-Adriatico and Itzulia Basque Country in the coming months. His programme has now been adjusted on the website to show a potential return at Amstel Gold Race<\/a> on 19 April, although this has not been confirmed by his team.<\/p>\n

Belgian publication Het Laatste Nieuws<\/a> reports that Van Gils will not require surgery on his injury, but will have to stay off the bike for four to six weeks before returning to training.<\/p>\n

The 26-year-old had enjoyed a promising start to 2026; he won his opening race day \u2013 a team time trial at the Trofeo Ses Salines \u2013 and placed third at the Trofeo Andratx-Pollen\u00e7a, which his team-mate Remco Evenepoel<\/a> won.<\/p>\n

Since its inception in 2022, the Cl\u00e1sica Ja\u00e9n, has been considered the Spanish cousin of Strade Bianche<\/a>, thanks to its six gravel sectors.
