The wife of The Lemonheads<\/a>\u2018\u00a0Evan Dando<\/a> has spoken out about the frontman\u2019s \u201cmeltdown\u201d, and how he was \u201cout of his mind\u201d during the filming of an abandoned Tiny Desk session.<\/p>\n

The musician is currently receiving mental health treatment in hospital after being accused of sending an unsolicited explicit video to a fan<\/a>.<\/p>\n

His wife, Antonia Teixeira, has now discussed the episode that led to his hospitalisation. She explained that the issues began earlier this year when she and her husband were in the US to film an edition of NPR\u2019s Tiny Desk.<\/p>\n

However, Teixeira said the episode would never be released because of how Dando\u2019s mental state was at the time.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Billboard <\/a>on the day her husband was admitted to the hospital (Friday February 13), she explained that Dando had been struggling with heavy drinking and prescription drug abuse throughout their five-year relationship.<\/p>\n

Teixeira claimed that his most recent bout of mental health issues had started a few weeks before he checked into the hospital. The couple had travelled to New York City from their home in S\u00e3o Paulo so that The Lemonheads could appear on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on January 20.<\/p>\n

Following this TV appearance, the band headed to Washington, D.C. to film their episode of Tiny Desk.<\/p>\n

Teixeira said she became concerned due to her husband\u2019s behaviour starting to become erratic during the trip. \u201cThat day, he was totally out of his mind,\u201d she remembered. \u201cSo out of his mind, that the Tiny Desk won\u2019t be aired.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Teixeira, Dando\u2019s unpredictable behaviour continued when the pair got back to Brazil. She recalled how \u201ceverything went to hell\u201d on one particular day recently. Teixeira alleged that Dando ingested large quantities of Adderall, THC and mushrooms at the same time, and began exchanging explicit videos with multiple women on X\/Twitter.<\/p>\n

She took Dando to the facility where he is currently receiving care after finding these videos. His wife also gave him an ultimatum: if he doesn\u2019t finish his treatment, she will file for a divorce. Teixeira said she believed the treatment would take at least 30 days.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t imagine how mad I was when I saw that he was sending messages to girls,\u201d Teixeira said. \u201cI\u2019m very mad, because he betrayed me.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also thought Dando sent the unsolicited video by accident to the wrong woman: \u201cFrom what I\u2019m looking [at] now, it wasn\u2019t \u2026 he doesn\u2019t remember what he did. He was in a mental meltdown.\u201d<\/p>\n

Teixeira explained that Dando was \u201cvery embarrassed\u201d about his behaviour after finding out what he had done. She said that his apparent relapse was a case of \u201cself-sabotage\u201d, as he had recently finished a new album and was set to head out on tour this summer (the dates have since been cancelled).<\/p>\n

As for his treatment plan, Teixeira continued: \u201cIf he\u2019s really, really committed, he can do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

She went on: \u201cI feel like this is a second phase of his healing, you know? It\u2019s him actually taking into his own hands, his responsibilities, the consequences, and not blaming other people and just trying to be better because he wants to be better himself \u2026 I\u2019m very hopeful that things will get better.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2025, The Lemonheads released their first full-length original album in 19 years, \u2018Love Chant\u2019. Dando also published a memoir, Rumours of My Demise<\/a>, which detailed his history of substance abuse.<\/p>\n

The fan who has accused Dando of sending an unsolicited explicit video is identified only as Dawn on journalist Tony Ortega\u2019s Substack The Underground Bunker<\/a>. She claimed she had contacted the frontman via a direct message on social media to congratulate him on The Lemonheads\u2019 new album.<\/p>\n

Dando allegedly replied, \u201cCool I\u2019m sorry I\u2019m an exhibitionist\u201d, and sent a video of himself masturbating to Dawn without her consent the following day.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s him sitting in a basement or something, and he\u2019s fully masturbating,\u201d Dawn told Ortega. \u201cYou can see his penis, and his face. It\u2019s definitely him. He\u2019s filming it from a weird angle.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cIt\u2019s so gross. I don\u2019t want him to do this to anyone else. It\u2019s just a gross feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a statement obtained by Rolling Stone<\/a>, Dando\u2019s publicist said: \u201cEvan Dando has long struggled with mental health issues dating back to his childhood. He\u2019s been admitted to a local hospital where he\u2019s receiving comprehensive help from experienced doctors and mental health professionals.\u201d<\/p>\n

Writing in one chapter of Rumours Of My Demise, Dando recalled of his struggles: \u201cMost of my real friends retreated, hoping things would change. The rest got a kick out of watching me unravel. I was in horrible shape, losing teeth, and living off cheeseburgers \u2026 and a $200 daily drug habit.\u201d<\/p>\n
