It\u2019s time to shovel some coal into the Rumor Mill furnaces, folks, because whispers around the internet suggest that Hamnet and Eternals<\/a> director Chlo\u00e9 Zhao could helm the next installment of Paramount<\/a>\u2018s Mission: Impossible franchise. Wait! The last movie in the series is called Mission: Impossible \u2013 The Final Reckoning, so what gives? Really? Are you aware of how much Tom Cruise loves the Mission Impossible franchise? Or how much money is there with the potential of another sequel? Granted, the last two installments of the franchise didn\u2019t do gangbusters like Cruise and Paramount would have hoped, but who\u2019s to say assigning Zhao to the next chapter won\u2019t give the series a fresh start?<\/p>\n

Where did this rumor start?<\/p>\n

Where is this rumor coming from? Have you heard of Deuxmoi, the \u201ccurators of pop culture?\u201d Yeah. Them. Deuxmoi lit the fuse on the Mission: Impossible rumor on Instagram<\/a>, saying Tom Cruise sought Chlo\u00e9 Zhao to write and direct Mission: Impossible 9, and that they\u2019ve worked out a treatment. Okay. Before we go jumping for joy, keep in mind that Deuxmoi would not reveal its sources, so this could be hearsay. If Zhao agreed to direct Mission: Impossible 9, she would be the first new director on the franchise since 2015, after Christopher McQuarrie helmed Mission: Impossible \u2013 Rogue Nation, Mission: Impossible \u2013 Fallout, Mission: Impossible \u2013 Dead Reckoning, and Mission: Impossible \u2013 The Final Reckoning.<\/p>\n

Let Zhao cook!<\/p>\n

While today\u2019s \u201cnews\u201d is just a rumor, I love the idea of Chlo\u00e9 Zhao<\/a> directing the next chapter of the Mission: Impossible franchise. Hamnet was excellent<\/a>, and I\u2019m a staunch defender of Zhao\u2019s MCU film Eternals. She has an incredible eye and a passion for on-location shooting, suggesting M:I 9 may include breathtaking vistas and venues for outrageous action sequences. It\u2019s not like the franchise hasn\u2019t done that already, but Zhao is known for extracting beauty from the world in unpredictable ways. Zhao would likely give the Mission: Impossible franchise a much-needed kick in the pants. McQuarrie has done an exceptional job over the past several years, though perhaps it\u2019s time to pass the torch to someone new.<\/p>\n
