{"id":434108,"date":"2026-02-19T12:15:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T12:15:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/434108\/"},"modified":"2026-02-19T12:15:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T12:15:09","slug":"uk-defence-tests-next-generation-atomic-clocks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/434108\/","title":{"rendered":"UK Defence Tests Next-Generation Atomic Clocks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Insider Brief<\/p>\n<p>A trial led by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) has advanced the development and testing of next-generation atomic clocks to strengthen UK military position, navigation and timing capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>The trial enabled manufacturers to test atomic clock components and full systems in realistic, long-term operational conditions to assess resilience outside laboratory environments.<\/p>\n<p>A follow-on trial is planned for 2027, with the aim of deploying quantum navigation systems, including atomic clocks, on UK aircraft by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>PRESS RELEASE \u2014 A trial led by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) has helped develop a new generation of critically improved atomic clock technology for the UK military.<\/p>\n<p>UK forces must be able to operate across all terrains, locations and climates. This requires crucial position, navigation and timing (PNT) data \u2013 mostly provided by satellite technology, such as GPS. This can easily be denied or interrupted, potentially impacting activities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Matthew Aldous, formerly Dstl\u2019s theme lead for Quantum Sensing, said:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thequantuminsider.com\/data\/\" onclick=\"_gs(&#039;event&#039;, &#039;DATA IN CONTENT NEW&#039;)\" class=\"responsive-image\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1764239594_934_Website-Banner-Quantum-2.gif\" alt=\"Responsive Image\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTiming plays a massive role in society, such as navigation for emergency services to banks dispensing cash from machines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are building the next generation of atomic clocks which will provide new capabilities, better performance and improved resilience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are using our expertise to ensure our defence and security customers have a detailed understanding of advances in technology and how we can help them integrate and exploit it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clock Details<\/p>\n<p>Clocks require 3 components: a mechanism that creates a consistent frequency, a device that counts this frequency, and a method to convert the counter into a displayable time.<\/p>\n<p>Atomic clocks use waves of light to energise atoms in such a way that produces a frequency that is significantly more accurate than traditional clocks.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Trial Details<\/p>\n<p>Dstl\u2019s trial enabled atomic clock manufacturers to test individual components and entire devices. The long-term unattended operation provided a more realistic deployment test than is possible in a laboratory environment. This allows the innovators to better understand the robust standards required for specific military environments.<\/p>\n<p>Commander Matt Steele, the Future Technology Officer for the Royal Navy\u2019s Office of the Chief Technical Officer, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving a navigation system that is precise, accurate and persistent to provide safe navigation underwater, whether for a crewed submarine or uncrewed vessel is critical for the Royal Navy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe experience gained from this, and previous trials has put the UK in a strong position to lead globally and help shape these technologies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As well as improving current and future capabilities for the military, the trial could open up new markets and opportunities for UK industry.<\/p>\n<p>One of the participants, Far Field Exploits, is a small enterprise founded by former military personnel. Director Simon Merrett said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe make a wireless time and frequency transfer system for atomic clocks. We didn\u2019t have the test and measurement expertise in house or the specialist equipment. Dstl provided both of those which was a great collaboration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next steps<\/p>\n<p>A further trial is planned for 2027 which will focus on specific military challenges, expanding beyond just atomic clocks.
