Ian Rowland’s recent article for Grant
\nThornton<\/a> highlights a reality I see every day in my
\nwork with innovative businesses across the North West: while the
\nregion is rich with talent, ideas and industrial capability, rising
\ncosts and increasing scrutiny are putting pressure on
\ncompanies’ ability to invest and scale. His analysis of the
\nshifting R&D tax landscape is especially timely, with claim
\nvolumes down and compliance expectations higher than ever.<\/p>\n

What resonated most with me is Ian’s point about the need
\nfor companies to adapt if they want to continue unlocking value
\nfrom the incentives available \u2013 this applies equally to a
\nbusiness’s intellectual property (IP) strategy as it does to
\nits approach to taxation.<\/p>\n

In my part of the conversation, I touched on the role that IP
\nrights play in protecting and amplifying the very innovation that
\nR&D incentives are designed to encourage. I want to build on
\nthat point here, because too often businesses view patents,
\ntrademarks or design protection as optional \u2013 something to
\n“get around to” once growth is already secured. In
\nreality, strong IP foundations are essential for creating
\nlong\u2011term value.<\/p>\n

We’re increasingly seeing that businesses who integrate
\ntheir IP strategy with their tax strategy are the ones best
\npositioned to weather economic pressures. Patent Box is an obvious
\nexample. As Ian highlighted, it remains heavily skewed towards
\nlarger companies, yet the opportunity for SMEs is significant. For
\nmany companies, Patent Box can offset the costs associated with
\nprotecting new technology \u2013 effectively transforming patents
\nfrom a perceived expense into both a defensive asset and a
\nfinancial benefit.<\/p>\n

But beyond the tax benefit, the strategic value of IP is often
\nunderestimated. Rights over brands, software, product appearance
\nand technical innovation don’t just secure competitive
\nposition; they also enhance licensing opportunities, strengthen
\ninvestor confidence and create identifiable assets on the balance
\nsheet. In a market where scrutiny is increasing and margins are
\ntightening, these factors matter.<\/p>\n

Ian is absolutely right: the North West is well\u2011placed to
\ndeliver on the ambitions of Invest 2035. But doing so requires
\nbusinesses to be disciplined and forward-thinking in protecting and
\ncommercialising their innovation. Bringing R&D incentives and
\nIP strategy together is one of the most powerful ways to achieve
\nthis.<\/p>\n
