{"id":435987,"date":"2026-02-20T11:11:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-20T11:11:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/435987\/"},"modified":"2026-02-20T11:11:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-20T11:11:09","slug":"l-architects-overhauls-last-home-by-revealing-its-original-features","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/435987\/","title":{"rendered":"L Architects overhauls \u201clast home\u201d by revealing its original features"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ceiling board and layers of plaster were stripped down to reveal the original <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/bricks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brickwork<\/a> of this two-storeyed terraced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/residential\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">house<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/singapore\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Singapore<\/a>, overhauled by L Architects.<\/p>\n<p>Located on Barker Road, the 252-square-metre house was originally built 30 years ago for a now-retired professor.<\/p>\n<p>Named My Last Home, the client tasked the <a href=\"https:\/\/larchitects.com.sg\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">L Architects<\/a> team with executing what he envisioned to be the &#8220;final renovation&#8221; of his residence.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2298079 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/my-last-home-l-architects-residential-barker-road-singapore-interiors_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Interiors of My Last Home in Singapore by L Architects\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>L Architects has overhauled a terraced house in Singapore<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This house is for a professor who was returning to Singapore for his retirement and told the team that this will likely be the final renovation for this home,&#8221; L Architects founder Lim Shing Hui told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I left the [first] meeting feeling a certain weight on my shoulders, and wondering if we could truly give him what he was looking for \u2013 to design someone&#8217;s last home,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>L Architects aimed to reveal the original features of the house by stripping back the layers of wall plaster and false ceiling that had been added over time.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2298089 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/my-last-home-l-architects-residential-barker-road-singapore-interiors_dezeen_2364_col_9-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Interiors of My Last Home in Singapore by L Architects\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The house is located on Barker Road in Singapore<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we first visited the house, we sensed that it was patiently waiting to reclaim its more authentic self,&#8221; Lim said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We wanted to rediscover the original spirit of the house, which we believed had an interesting story to tell,&#8221; she continued.<\/p>\n<p>The residence is organised across two storeys, with an open-plan living area, library, kitchen and study overlooking the backyard on the ground floor.<\/p>\n<p>This is connected by a teakwood staircase to a primary bedroom, guest room and storage room on the first floor.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2298088 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/my-last-home-l-architects-residential-barker-road-singapore-interiors_dezeen_2364_col_8-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Interiors of My Last Home in Singapore by L Architects\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>L Architects unmasked the original features of the house<\/p>\n<p>Across the house, the L Architects team \u2013 comprising Lim, Tse Lee Shing and Loo Quan Le \u2013 removed and reorganised some of the non-load-bearing walls to improve cross-ventilation.<\/p>\n<p>Newly-built walls made of modern three-hole bricks were erected. On the ground floor, these were teamed with sliding doors and perforated screens to divide the common areas.<\/p>\n<p>While carrying out a test removal of the wall plaster, the team discovered English bond brickwork underneath, which they decided to unmask, complemented by concrete pillars and beams.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/06\/09\/suzuko-yamada-architects-nakano-house\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/nakano-house-suzuko-yamada-architects-japan-tokyo-architecture-residential-kei-sasaki_dezeen_2364_sq.jpeg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Nakano House by Suzuko Yamada Architects\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Suzuko Yamada Architects casts furniture within walls of concrete Japanese house\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As we removed the plaster, a lot of the mechanical and electrical items, like the old wiring and its conduits, were also removed,&#8221; explained Lim.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Upon removing these items, we start to see the grazed tracks on the walls like battle &#8216;scars&#8217;. We convinced our client to retain it as part of the historical story of what this house has gone through,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>On the first floor, false ceiling boards were peeled away to uncover the original pitched ceiling with exposed timber rafters.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2298081 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/my-last-home-l-architects-residential-barker-road-singapore-interiors_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"My Last Home, Singapore, by L Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>Stainless steel surfaces cover the kitchen<\/p>\n<p>Solid timber furniture was sourced for the residence, including a vintage bed and study table that had been sitting in the client&#8217;s storage for several years.<\/p>\n<p>Bespoke reclaimed timber benches were created for the foyer and bedroom and complemented by teak-covered built-in carpentry that is dotted across the space.<\/p>\n<p>Cement screed flooring features on the ground floor, complemented with chestnut-hued timber flooring on the first floor.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2298095 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/my-last-home-l-architects-residential-barker-road-singapore-interiors_dezeen_2364_col_16-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"My Last Home, Singapore, by L Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>A pitched ceiling was uncovered in the primary bedroom<\/p>\n<p>The tactile material palette of the residence is contrasted by stainless steel surfaces in the kitchen and exposed mechanical services, including ducts and rainwater harvesting pipes.<\/p>\n<p>In the bathrooms, L Architects installed glazed subway tiles mimicking the proportions of the bricks forming the original walls.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The house must represent the current moment of when the renovation took place, resulting in a harmonious mix of both the past and present,&#8221; Lim commented.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2298102 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/my-last-home-l-architects-residential-barker-road-singapore-interiors_dezeen_2364_col_28-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Interiors of My Last Home in Singapore by L Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>English bond brickwork features throughout<\/p>\n<p>L Architects is a Singapore-based architecture office founded by Lim in 2016.
