His team never seemed in control in the run-in to the sprint, and Philipsen was lost in the melee. The Belgian finished down in 10th, and is starting the season uncharacteristically slowly.<\/p>\n<p>2026-02-21T15:28:40.558Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"20c6bb20-26bd-4e0f-9954-1be4863c7fa5\">Jordi Meeus again had to settle for second place, having also finished behind Magner on the opening day. He\u2019s looking in great shape, but is up against a formidable foe in the Frenchman.<\/p>\n<p>2026-02-21T15:27:42.602Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"e4578f6a-e7fa-4ede-809c-5168a98e7bbe\">It was a messy bunch sprint, with the leadouts rushed after such a prolonged wait beforehand. Tim Torn Teutenberg had to squeeze through a tight gap between himself and the barrier, but led the sprint as a result, but didn\u2019t have the legs to hold off those approaching behind him.<\/p>\n<p>2026-02-21T15:25:49.182Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"440fba09-fb73-4786-8f09-23fc8f8dc585\">That was another seriously impressive sprint from Magnier. This promises to be a long, drawn-out and tense fight ahead of the likely bunch sprint.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-20km-to-go\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>20KM TO GO<\/p>\n<p>2026-02-21T14:48:56.926Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"e7fe19e5-1b61-4d48-85c5-50f7084f8925\">All the other sprinters teams have emerged towards the front of the peloton these past few kilometres, swarming out the familiar faces Alpecin and Soudal.<\/p>\n<p>2026-02-21T14:43:03.322Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"06d69474-9c70-4c55-8f8c-28e20ce47996\">Nunes is caught, so that&#8217;s it, the race is all back together again now, with 27km left to ride.<\/p>\n<p>2026-02-21T14:40:10.077Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"45e06995-7851-4d30-891c-403349c63c1e\">Mechanical for Arensman in the peloton. That would suggest he&#8217;s not going to again try what he did here last year and sprint for the win perhaps content with his success from yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>2026-02-21T14:37:40.492Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"87edc748-ab35-4c76-b8dc-fe8c43bcb200\">They leaders now have 18 seconds on the slowed-down peloton.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-30km-to-go\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>30KM TO GO<\/p>\n<p>2026-02-21T14:37:02.245Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"cf8c8fd1-812e-4a8d-bcbf-e0279ddc03c5\">The bunch has slowed, evidently not wanting to make the catch too early. That\u2019s allowed an opportunist counter-attacker to slip clear of the peloton.<\/p>\n<p>2026-02-21T14:34:31.415Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"430f644b-b86d-42c3-8aed-b0bc15fb75a7\">The riders have crossed the finish line for the first time, prior to a final lap before arriving here for a second and climactic sprint.<\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly after last year\u2019s chaos, the road they accidentally went down last year has been barricaded.<\/p>\n<p>2026-02-21T14:32:58.652Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"a4707cd3-660e-4e80-9958-457b47fcb375\">That is, the rest of the break has been caught &#8211; three riders who slipped clear, Campos, Silva and Nunes, remain out front.<\/p>\n<p>2026-02-21T14:32:14.790Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"ce2aeb4b-35ab-4de5-81f1-8cab56c893e7\">After splitting up a little more, the break has, inevitably, been caught.<\/p>\n<p>2026-02-21T14:25:31.474Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"bd65f6ba-43ca-4ebe-84d6-9cc3225a5de8\">It\u2019s still Soudal and Alpecin doing all the work leading the peloton. As the finish approaches we\u2019ll see the other sprint teams jostling for position for their leaders, but the pressure is on Philipsen and Magnier to deliver after all the work done by their teammates up until now.<\/p>\n<p>2026-02-21T14:22:37.346Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"9913865d-93af-4de4-ae80-768d85d6f0ab\">Now the gap&#8217;s a mere 17 seconds. It&#8217;s only a matter of time until the break is caught.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-40km-to-go\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>40KM TO GO<\/p>\n<p>2026-02-21T14:20:54.454Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"10239067-5e43-4457-9e84-3c0c4a415074\">In between these attacks the pace keeps slowing, with no cohesion in the group, and as a result the peloton is getting closer and closer &#8211; now just 30 seconds away.<\/p>\n<p>2026-02-21T14:19:56.651Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"7473c378-59f5-48e3-82bf-022c637ea07a\">The attacks keep coming in the break! The terrain, which is lightly downhill, isn&#8217;t helping anybody to go clear, however.<\/p>\n<p>2026-02-21T14:18:38.936Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"a7086dd4-d1cd-4399-b44d-fe69708c8303\">Pinto has been caught, by a peloton that is now just 40 or so seconds behind.<\/p>\n<p>2026-02-21T14:17:08.337Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"43f8af84-f606-4161-b0d9-d0d6547aa784\">Pinto had actually been dropped from the group, rather than the man to have attacked. He&#8217;s now several seconds adrift<\/p>\n<p>2026-02-21T14:15:42.669Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"2848fb29-fce2-4a05-85c8-98bea2786647\">It\u2019s hard to go back to working together after the break split up earlier, with the three-man attack on the climb earlier.<\/p>\n<p>2026-02-21T14:15:23.290Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"713cadc1-9e70-49ca-8877-f58ef8fc8f4c\">They&#8217;ve been caught, but the attacks continue to come.<\/p>\n<p>2026-02-21T14:14:05.375Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"c05cc08e-b1ca-47b6-8210-5d31545c87d9\">Pinto has made a move, and Contte has latched onto his wheel.<\/p>\n<p>2026-02-21T14:13:43.484Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"1024f87f-d2ec-44ad-b9ba-89ad40153d7d\">Cohesion is breaking down in the break, as the riders are attacking each other.<\/p>\n<p>2026-02-21T14:10:57.314Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"74bd513d-5232-4014-8c39-94d93e9572e4\">Only 55 seconds for the leaders now. They&#8217;re just one minute behind the leaders as they take on an uncategorised rise in the road.<\/p>\n<p>2026-02-21T13:59:37.408Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"72d94588-2fc8-4058-ae48-dd44e498793a\">The riders are approaching the finishing circuit, and will cross the finish line in Lagosfor the first time in about 25km.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/races\/volta-ao-algarve-2025\/stage-1\/results\/\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/races\/volta-ao-algarve-2025\/stage-1\/results\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">This was the town of great confusion last year,<\/a> when Filippo Ganna believed he had won the stage &#8211; only to realise that he and most of the rest of the peloton had gone down the wrong road at the finish. Ultimately, all the results were annulled. The organisers will be praying for a less chaotic finish this time.<\/p>\n<p>2026-02-21T13:55:38.712Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"3d544d6b-2944-466b-8ef8-1067d6a925ea\">Meanwhile the peloton have close the gap to the break, bringing it down to 1:40.
