{"id":439406,"date":"2026-02-22T09:46:13","date_gmt":"2026-02-22T09:46:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/439406\/"},"modified":"2026-02-22T09:46:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-22T09:46:13","slug":"concerns-for-vulnerable-road-users-as-met-disbands-specialist-cycle-and-motorcycle-safety-units-cycling-news-bike-reviews","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/439406\/","title":{"rendered":"Concerns for vulnerable road users as Met disbands specialist cycle and motorcycle safety units &#8211; Cycling News | Bike Reviews"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Specialist Met Police units that investigate fatal collisions involving HGV\u2019s and London\u00a0buses, with a specific focus on cyclist and motorbike safety, are being disbanded as part of a major overhaul of road policing in the capital.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The changes are being introduced this month as part of the second phase of the force\u2019s \u201cNew Met for London\u201d plan, which prioritises neighbourhood policing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Road safety campaigners and politicians have warned that scrapping the dedicated teams could increase the risk posed by large vehicles, which are the greatest threat to vulnerable road users.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cycle safety team, motorcycle safety team and commercial vehicle unit will no longer exist in their current form.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Metropolitan-Police-Task-force-with-Kulveer-Ranger-and-Mark-Gore-picture-credit-TfL.jpg\" alt=\"Metropolitan Police Task force with Kulveer Ranger and Mark Gore (picture credit TfL).jpg\"\/>Metropolitan Police Task force with Kulveer Ranger and Mark Gore (picture credit TfL).jpg (Image Credit: TfL)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, the Met told road.cc it will create a new \u201cRoad Danger Reduction Team to proactively enforce the most serious road traffic offences, such as speeding, drink and drug driving, and driving while on a mobile phone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis large team will take on some of the functions of dedicated teams such as the Cycle Safety Team, Motorcycle Safety Team, Commercial Vehicle Unit, while other activities will form part of the Met\u2019s core policing activity and delivered by MPS-funded Roads Policing Teams or other MPS teams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/road.cc\/content\/news\/11-cyclists-day-fined-riding-through-red-lights-309263\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&gt; 11 cyclists a day hit with \u00a350 fines for riding through red lights in London, new Met Police data reveals<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Met\u2019s commercial vehicle unit, which is the largest of its kind in Europe, currently provides the only 24\/7 specialist response to serious and fatal incidents involving HGVs and buses in London.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Officers conduct collision investigations, tachograph inspections, load security checks, and targeted enforcement against non-compliant operators.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a Freedom of Information response to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/transport\/metropolitan-police-disbands-hgv-cycle-motorbike-safety-teams-b1271712.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">The Standard<\/a> in December, the Met confirmed that staff in the commercial vehicle unit had been told that their standalone department would be disbanded, with some of its responsibilities expected to transfer to the new Road Danger Reduction Team.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/joint-enforcement-operation-targeting-anti-social-cycling-london-city-london-police.jpg\" alt=\"Joint enforcement operation targeting anti-social cycling in London\"\/>Joint enforcement operation targeting anti-social cycling in London (Image Credit: City of London Police)<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The unit is funded by Transport for London, which contributed \u00a39.8 million in 2024\/25 to the Met\u2019s Roads and Transport Policing Command. That funding supports around 1,500 officers and 500 PCSOs across the capital\u2019s 32 boroughs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TfL told stakeholders before Christmas that dedicated road safety policing teams covering areas such as commercial vehicles, cycles, and motorcycles will no longer exist in their current form. It said that engagement, education and byelaw enforcement would instead be carried out by its own enforcement teams, freeing up police officers to focus on crime.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/road.cc\/content\/news\/cyclist-killed-racing-moped-rider-bike-lane-315977\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&gt; \u00a0\u201cA stark reminder\u201d: Cyclist killed by \u2018racing\u2019 moped rider cutting through traffic in bike lane, as cycling campaigners call for \u201cimmediate and decisive action\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A TfL spokesperson said the authority will continue to fund additional policing on the transport network and maintained that specialist expertise to protect vulnerable road users would be retained under the new structure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The unit is funded by Transport for London (TfL). TfL contributed \u00a393.8 million in 2024\/25 towards the Met\u2019s Roads and Transport Policing Command. That funding supports around 1,500 officers and 500 PCSOs across the 32 boroughs policed by the force.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This news has sparked concern among political and industry leaders.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caroline Russell, Green Party member of the London Assembly, pointed out that a proposed 14 per cent reduction in the Roads and Transport Policing Command would, in the Met\u2019s own words, result in a reduced capacity for fast road responses, pursuit resolutions and road danger reduction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Motorcycle Action Group has condemned the decision to disband the six-officer motorcycle safety team. The team delivered hundreds of safety courses each year to bikers and courier riders.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/cyclist-cycle-lane-london-transport-london.jpg\" alt=\"Cyclist on cycle lane, London\"\/>Cyclist on cycle lane, London (Image Credit: Transport for London)<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, former traffic commissioner Beverley Bell has written to the Met Commissioner, Mark Rowley, urging him to reverse the decision, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/motortransport.co.uk\/madness-former-senior-traffic-commissioner-urges-u-turn-on-met-cv-unit-closure-decision\/89340.article?adredir=1\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">MotorTransport<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In her letter, Bell described closing the commercial vehicle unit as \u201cmadness\u201d. She argued that the decision could not be justified by cost, ineffectiveness or poor stakeholder engagement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/road.cc\/content\/news\/police-unable-deal-motorists-driving-bike-lanes-310549\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&gt; \u201cThis gives errant drivers carte blanche to do what they like\u201d: Police tell camera cyclists they are \u201cunable to deal\u201d with motorists driving in bike lanes or the wrong way down one-way streets, while warning cyclists to \u201cnot confront\u201d dangerous drivers<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe decision cannot be driven by a lack of finance, as the Met Police force doesn\u2019t pay for the unit. It is paid for by TfL,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She warned that if no specialist team remains, non-compliant operators will feel emboldened, with potentially serious consequences.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA 44-tonne vehicle, a 53-seater coach or bus may plough into a group of innocent people crossing the road.
