Trump\u00a0appointed Landry as his special envoy to Greenland<\/a> just before Christmas,\u00a0as the U.S. president continued his push for control<\/a> of the self-ruling Danish territory, which he has said is vital for American national security<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Trump announced the plan to send a hospital ship just before hosting a dinner for Republican governors<\/a> at the White House, where he sat next to Landry. Landry reposted Trump\u2019s message in a separate social media post<\/a>, adding: \u201cProud to work with you on this important issue!\u201d<\/p>\n

It was unclear what prompted Trump to make the announcement. The White House and the Pentagon haven\u2019t commented on the president\u2019s post<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Denmark\u2019s Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said Sunday on national broadcaster DR<\/a>: \u201cThe Greenlandic population receives the health care it needs<\/a>, either in Greenland or, if specialized treatment is required, in Denmark.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not as though there\u2019s a need for a special health care initiative in Greenland,\u201d Poulsen said.<\/p>\n

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen earlier this month called the continuing U.S. pressure<\/a> over Greenland \u201cunacceptable,\u201d in remarks at the Munich Security Conference. \u201cLet me put it this way: If one NATO country attacks another NATO country, then NATO ends.
