Iga Swiatek fell to a shock defeat in the fourth round at the Canadian Open<\/a>, losing 7-6 6-3 to world No. 19 Clara Tauson.The Wimbledon champion<\/a> and second seed in Montreal looked out of sorts as her opponent avenged the loss at SW19 last month.<\/p>\n

It was the latest unexpected exit for a top player, after top seed Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula and fourth seed Mirra Andreeva all lost.<\/p>\n

“Obviously it’s really great, and it shows all the hard work I’ve been doing has been the right thing,” said Tauson in her on-court interview.<\/p>\n

“I’m getting more confidence in this kind of level and feeling like I belong here a bit more. I think that really helped me today in the important points.<\/p>\n

“It’s tough conditions here with the wind but I tried my best to keep my head cool and keep working.<\/p>\n

“Even though I got broken in the second set, I was feeling confident and I’m really happy about the win.”<\/p>\n

Tauson will play American Madison Keys in the quarter-finals after the Australian Open champion beat Karolina Muchova.<\/p>\n

“Clara’s a fantastic ball-striker,” Keys said of her next opponent. “She’s got a big serve. She’s got a lot of power on both sides.<\/p>\n

“She covers the court quite well on top of everything, so I feel like she’s one of those matches where you kind of have to temper a little bit and not go for things too quickly.”<\/p>\n

Osaka storms into last eight<\/p>\n

Naomi Osaka caught the eye in her fourth round match, beating Anastasija Sevastova 6-1 6-0 in just 49 minutes.<\/p>\n

The 27-year-old is targeting a first title since she returned from maternity leave early last year.<\/p>\n

She has reached the quarter-finals of a WTA 1000 event for the first time in 19 months, having appointed Swiatek’s former coach Tomasz Wiktorowski.<\/p>\n

“I had a solid plan coming in here, and it happened to work out very well,” Osaka said.<\/p>\n

The Japanese star will face an in-form Elina Svitolina in the last eight, after the Ukrainian beat Wimbledon finalist Amanda Anisimova 6-4 6-1.<\/p>\n

Svitolina, who won the Canadian Open in 2017, looked at her imperious best at times as she comfortably got the better of Anisimova.<\/p>\n

“It was a great performance from me tonight,” Svitolina said. “I\u2019m happy I could play well and move well because Amanda is such a big striker. I had to be physically strong. Very happy I could do it well today.”<\/p>\n
