{"id":440722,"date":"2026-02-23T05:04:16","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T05:04:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/440722\/"},"modified":"2026-02-23T05:04:16","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T05:04:16","slug":"uk-needs-more-gas-storage-sites-as-risk-of-energy-shortage-looms-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/440722\/","title":{"rendered":"UK needs more gas storage sites as risk of energy shortage looms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Britain needs to develop more gas storage sites and keep North Sea gas fields open as long as possible to help see off a looming risk of energy shortages, ministers have been warned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The government must take \u201curgent\u201d action to shore up future gas supplies as critical infrastructure is at risk of closure, creating \u201cmaterial risks to security of supply\u201d, according to National Gas, the gas system operator.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cClear and timely decisions on risk appetite, and the measures necessary to address them, are now urgently needed to ensure Great Britain can continue to meet its required gas and power demand, both safely and reliably, throughout the energy transition,\u201d it warns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The government has been consulting on how to ensure future gas security as North Sea production dwindles, after the government-owned National Energy System Operator warned of \u201can emerging risk to gas supply security\u201d. Britain may not have enough gas to meet its needs by 2030 if the shift to greener energy is slower than planned or if the single biggest piece of gas infrastructure fails, Neso found, in a report quietly released in November on the day of the budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/business\/energy\/article\/clean-power-energy-resilience-is-not-a-binary-choice-jon-butterworth-t62c0f5zd\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Writing in The Times today<\/a>, Jon Butterworth, chief executive of National Gas, warns of the need to accept \u201cuncomfortable realities\u201d, including that gas demand on the coldest days \u201cwill remain broadly the same for many years to come\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cToo often, today\u2019s energy debate feels disconnected from this reality, framed as a binary choice: wholesale change or no change at all. This is a false choice and it risks clouding our ability to make the right decisions as a country,\u201d he writes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">In a consultation response seen by The Times, National Gas warns that \u201cinfrastructure required to meet low-probability but high-impact events, such as periods of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/business\/energy\/article\/uk-electricity-demand-surges-hb78hjr8m\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">peak power demand<\/a> coinciding with low renewable generation, is increasingly under commercial pressure\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cIf these pressures persist, there is a risk that critical infrastructure providers may exit the market without replacement, creating material risks to security of supply,\u201d it says, calling for \u201ca range of both market-based and infrastructure interventions\u201d to address this.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Three workers in safety gear stand on a yellow platform above gas pipelines, surveying the landscape.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/\/02e79dd4-b44a-4f5c-b119-e0dc4e3e3509.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The government should \u201cmaintain existing storage capacity and introduce or facilitate expansion\u201d to help provide \u201cgreater domestic resilience, and protection against shipping delays, market disruption or extreme weather\u201d, it says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Britain has far lower gas storage levels than most European countries and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/business\/economics\/article\/centrica-energy-rough-north-sea-gas-reserves-jl30hv5hw\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">largest gas storage site, Rough, is at risk of closure<\/a>. However, Rough is a long-duration, seasonal storage site that can provide a steady modest supply of gas throughout winter months, whereas National Gas says that solutions need to \u201cprovide high-deliverability, and short-duration supply\u201d to help with periods of peak demand. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">National Gas also backs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/world\/russia-ukraine-war\/article\/building-starts-on-germanys-liquefied-natural-gas-terminals-zxdg7bxbq\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new floating terminals<\/a> to receive and store extra shipments of liquefied natural gas, an idea the government suggests in its consultation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">However, the company calls on the government to also consider \u201chow best to optimise remaining UK continental shelf production to keep existing gas fields for their full lifetime\u201d to ensure that \u201cGreat Britain makes full use of its existing domestic resources\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The government has sought to play down the impact of its North Sea policies on security of supply, stressing in its consultation that the basin is in natural decline and its decision to ban new exploration would not make \u201ca meaningful difference to supply\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">National Gas says that \u201cwhile geological decline is a significant factor, non-geological drivers may also be contributing to reduced UK continental shelf supply\u201d.
