data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/road\/teams\/uci-worldtour\/2026\/ineos-grenadiers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ineos Grenadiers<\/a> at the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/volta-ao-algarve\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/volta-ao-algarve\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/volta-ao-algarve\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Volta ao Algarve<\/a> came in the form of two quietly positive showings for their new GC riders, Oscar Onley and K\u00e9vin Vauquelin.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/oscar-onley\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/oscar-onley\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/oscar-onley\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Onley<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/kevin-vauquelin\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/kevin-vauquelin\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/kevin-vauquelin\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vauquelin<\/a>, both new signings for 2026, made their debuts for Ineos in Portugal last week, the start of a campaign which will see them both focusing on the Tour de France as the British team look to return to the podium of the race they once dominated.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"744f4c14-2236-44ed-8706-12d18f54b14d-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Though neither took a stand-out win on debut, it was a consistent week for both riders, with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/racing\/volta-ao-algarve-juan-ayuso-wins-final-stage-summit-finish-to-take-overall-title\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/racing\/volta-ao-algarve-juan-ayuso-wins-final-stage-summit-finish-to-take-overall-title\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/racing\/volta-ao-algarve-juan-ayuso-wins-final-stage-summit-finish-to-take-overall-title\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Onley finishing a close second on the final stage<\/a> to take fourth overall, whilst Vauquelin finished just 18 seconds further down in fifth.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Though Vauquelin sat fourth going into the final stage after a more consistent week and a better time trial, Onley arguably made more of a splash on the race, pulling on Ineos colours for the first time after his <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/transfers\/oscar-onley-signs-for-ineos-grenadiers-cutting-short-picnic-postnl-contract-after-tour-de-france-breakthrough\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/transfers\/oscar-onley-signs-for-ineos-grenadiers-cutting-short-picnic-postnl-contract-after-tour-de-france-breakthrough\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/transfers\/oscar-onley-signs-for-ineos-grenadiers-cutting-short-picnic-postnl-contract-after-tour-de-france-breakthrough\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">headline-making late move across from Picnic PostNL<\/a> in December.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The young Scot finished fourth on stage 2, and then nearly grabbed the win on stage 5, lunging for the line next to eventual stage and overall victor <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/juan-ayuso\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/juan-ayuso\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/juan-ayuso\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Juan Ayuso<\/a> (Lidl-Trek). He was let down by his time trial, ceding a minute to Ayuso on that day as his first outing on new equipment only netted 24th, but otherwise hit the ground running, considering he only signed for the team under two months ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&#8220;The first race with the team has been really nice. I only met some people, like Kim and Laurens, at dinner on the first night, so that was also a bit strange, but in the race it really felt like we&#8217;d been riding together for quite a few years,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&#8220;I was just saying on the bus that every key point we had this week, we really nailed, and that was really nice to see. The way we raced today was exactly why I wanted to join this team. Having numbers in the final and being able to play like we did, it was really nice to see and it sets us up in a good way going forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">The latest race content, interviews, features, reviews and expert buying guides, direct to your inbox!<\/p>\n<p>The lack of a win for the team&#8217;s climbers \u2013 only the final surge cost him on stage 5 \u2013 didn&#8217;t seem to deter Onley, though he did admit there are things he needs to work on going forward, perhaps most importantly the time trial.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Maybe we don\u2019t have the strongest guy outright, but together with our strengths, we can make things happen,&#8221; he said to media at the race including <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Z3NhV7ptPwM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Z3NhV7ptPwM\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\">WielerFlits<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/dnlbenson.substack.com\/p\/benson-bulletin-volta-ao-algarve-ea5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-url=\"https:\/\/dnlbenson.substack.com\/p\/benson-bulletin-volta-ao-algarve-ea5\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\">Daniel Benson&#8217;s Substack<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There\u2019s definitely some room for improvement. Their abilities complement each other \u2013 where Onley lacks in the TT, Vauquelin is strong, and it&#8217;s vice versa in the climbs \u2013 but in that sense neither looks fully complete as a GC contender just yet, and unfortunately Ineos can&#8217;t just merge them into one perfect rider. It seems like Ineos are trying to build their working relationship before the Tour de France where \u2013 reading between the lines \u2013 Onley looks more likely to be the primary leader, though French favourite Vauquelin&#8217;s time will surely come.<\/p>\n<p id=\"021beb51-84ea-44bf-a0c8-08a8d9a692ff\">It was a slightly opposite story for Vauquelin, who didn&#8217;t quite reach the heights on the climbs \u2013 he has always been a more punchy rider \u2013 but did well in the TT, yielding only 24 seconds to Ganna and beating riders like Stefan K\u00fcng (Tudor) and Jo\u00e3o Almeida (UAE Team Emirates-XRG).<\/p>\n<p>He was on the attack on stage 5, trying to set something up for Onley, but still managed to defend his own top-five placing in his first race since <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/news\/tour-de-france-national-hero-kevin-vauquelin-undergoes-surgery-after-lower-leg-fracture-complications\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/news\/tour-de-france-national-hero-kevin-vauquelin-undergoes-surgery-after-lower-leg-fracture-complications\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/news\/tour-de-france-national-hero-kevin-vauquelin-undergoes-surgery-after-lower-leg-fracture-complications\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">injuring his ankle shortly after last summer&#8217;s Tour<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A really nice day, and a nice week,&#8221; the Frenchman said after stage 5. &#8220;It was my first race after seven months, so I&#8217;m really happy to be in the front, for the GC and the race.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Though a lot of attention and possibly pressure will be on Vauquelin this year as he&#8217;s touted as one of France&#8217;s next great hopes in the Tour, he downplayed a sense of leadership at this point in the season.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ll go to Paris-Nice for the TTT and I think it&#8217;s possible to have a good GC with Oscar, because if you see this week, it&#8217;s good, and now we just need to improve some points.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:66.70%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/DdjvQbZpd5PMMkhNKBQqNi.jpg\" alt=\"LOULE, PORTUGAL - FEBRUARY 22: (L-R) Julian Alaphilippe of France and Team Tudor Pro Cycling, Florian Lipowitz of Germany and Team Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe and Kevin Vauquelin of France and Team INEOS Grenadiers compete in the breakaway during the 52nd Volta ao Algarve em Bicicleta 2026, Stage 5 a 148.4km stage from Faro to Malhao - Loule 512m on February 22, 2026 in Loule, Portugal. Saw a super strong team, really happy with my TT <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/tag\/performance\/\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/tag\/performance\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/tag\/performance\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">performance<\/a> and the feelings during the race. I\u2019ll definitely take a lot of positive[s] towards the next race,&#8221; he said in an <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DVEZ3HWDd4E\/?img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DVEZ3HWDd4E\/?img_index=1\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\">Instagram post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A puncture in the run in towards the final climb, being out of position and just not the best legs and a punchy climb for me wasn\u2019t a mixture for success. I let my head down on the last climb after I tried to look after Oscar where I could. I\u2019ll take the learnings and remember all the positives this week.
