{"id":442163,"date":"2026-02-24T01:38:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-24T01:38:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/442163\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T01:38:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T01:38:10","slug":"how-vernon-kays-life-changed-forever-at-the-clothes-show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/442163\/","title":{"rendered":"How Vernon Kay&#8217;s life changed forever at The Clothes Show"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Reminiscing over a picture of himself and friend Simon Bimpson at The Clothes Show in 1996, Vernon, 51, opened up about the moment that \u201cchanged his life forever,\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The Clothes Show was a British fashion show that was broadcast on BBC One from 1986 to 1998, and from 2006 to 2009 on UKTV Style and Really.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cWe went to the show on our way to see a friend of mine who had just moved from Bolton <a href=\"http:\/\/theboltonnews.co.uk\/wanderers?ref=au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Wanderers<\/a> to Aston Villa,\u201d Vernon said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cHe wasn\u2019t settling in and said, \u2018look guys, come and visit me,\u2019 so we did.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theboltonnews.co.uk\/news\/25354215.vernon-kay-one-radio-2-success-stories-figures-fall-overall\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">That visit would prove pivotal for Vernon.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Stopping along the way at The Clothes Show, Vernon caught the eye of modelling agent James Noel from Select Model Management.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Vernon said his friends teased him relentlessly, but he \u201cdidn\u2019t care\u201d.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThis happened on a Friday, and then on the following Friday I moved to London.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThe Friday after that I moved all my stuff down and never went back home,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThe rest, as they say, is history.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Vernon grew up in Horwich and attended St Joseph\u2019s RC High School before spending two years at St John Rigby College in Orrell.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He reportedly had his first job at 14, putting stickers on imported bananas, and later worked cleaning schools across Bolton.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Vernon graduated in environmental science from Manchester Metropolitan University before fate intervened at The Clothes Show.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Fast forward to today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theboltonnews.co.uk\/news\/25879181.vernon-kay-fronts-know-place-bbc-2\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">his new quiz airing tonight called Do You Know Your Place? sees Vernon challenging famous faces.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Paul Gorton from The Traitors acts as an unreliable tour guide, setting questions in towns and cities across the UK.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The contestants must decide what\u2019s fact and what\u2019s fiction while taking part in fun studio games along the way.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The celebrity with the most correct answers wins each episode, with an overall champion crowned at the end of the week.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The show airs tonight at 6.30pm.
