Ministry frontman and founder Al Jourgensen<\/a> isn\u2019t one to look back too often.<\/p>\n Aside from the recent revelations to Far Out<\/a>, his wishes to pursue a second career in goat herding once the whole music gig is finally behind him, Jourgensen\u2019s creative steering of the Ministry juggernaut across its 45 years has been centred on an unerring march toward new artistic pastures and a stubborn abandonment of meeting anyone\u2019s expectations.<\/p>\n Such a healthy disregard for nostalgia or resting laurels has yielded many a sharp U-turn in Ministry\u2019s discography. When 1992\u2019s Psalm 69 struck Lollapalooza gold with its thunderously mechanised metal assault, Jourgensen eschewed delivering an obligatory \u2018Psalm 70\u2019 by conjuring some of the most hellish swallows of stoner doom replete with dusky harmonicas and backwaters twang on the dismal Filth Pig<\/a> follow-up four years later. Once longtime co-member Paul Barker left after 2003\u2019s Animositisomina, Jourgensen swept aside their serrated industrial production to hurtle in the speed metal direction, kickstarting Ministry\u2019s \u2018Bush Trilogy.<\/p>\n There\u2019s one album that sticks in Ministry\u2019s oeuvre like a sore thumb, however. When initially founding the band in 1981, Jourgensen was cutting blasts of chilly post-punk with Chicago\u2019s Wax Trax! Records in the vein of Joy Division or early Cure. The next year, a signing with major label Arista would cut a distinctly different LP debut than fans may have been expecting off the back of the \u2018I\u2019m Falling\u2019 first single.<\/p>\n \u201cI find flaws in all of my records,\u201d Jourgensen revealed to Classic Rock in 2024. \u201cBut the situation around With Sympathy was bad, with [label boss] Clive Davis interfering, appointing producers and backing musicians, telling me where I could go, making me cut my fucking hair. They signed me because I was unique, then they tried to make me a eunuch. In that sense, personally, it\u2019s the worst album in the history of mankind.\u201d<\/p>\n 1983\u2019s LP debut long existed as a skeleton in Jourgensen\u2019s closet, but a key chapter of Ministry lore. For years, the frontman loathed With Sympathy\u2019s existence, bemoaning the alleged label interference in pushing Jourgensen\u2019s demos toward more commercial pop fare, and routinely stating that he didn\u2019t even consider the record a part of the Ministry back-catalogue.<\/p>\n
