{"id":445067,"date":"2026-02-25T16:12:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-25T16:12:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/445067\/"},"modified":"2026-02-25T16:12:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-25T16:12:08","slug":"targets-and-watchdog-for-nature-as-senedd-passes-new-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/445067\/","title":{"rendered":"Targets and watchdog for nature as Senedd passes new law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A major review of the state of the Welsh environment recently warned of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cpqypg3wr4qo\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;polluted rivers, failing soils&#8221; and &#8220;collapsing wildlife&#8221;<\/a> &#8211; with one in five species at risk of extinction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The new bill will also pave the way for new targets on halting declines in nature, with the aim for there to be &#8220;clear recovery&#8221; by 2050.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">WWF Cymru&#8217;s Alexander Phillips said seeing the legislation get passed was &#8220;a significant milestone&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">After &#8220;almost a decade of effort&#8221;, the new law would &#8220;recover some of what has been missing since we left the EU and aligns Wales with international biodiversity commitments,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;It will now be for the next Welsh government to pick up this baton and deliver a strong set of biodiversity targets no later than the spring of 2028 and ensure the strategies needed to deliver them are in place.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">RSPB Cymru&#8217;s Annie Smith said recent reports had &#8220;laid bare the scale of wildlife loss in Wales, along with serious underinvestment and failures in how our natural world is protected&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;This new framework must drive urgent action to reverse that decline and the deterioration of our environment \u2013 nature can&#8217;t wait any longer,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A major review of the state of the Welsh environment recently warned of &#8220;polluted rivers, failing soils&#8221; and&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":445068,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[22],"tags":[1397,90,56,54,55],"class_list":["post-445067","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-environment","tag-science","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/445067","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=445067"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/445067\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/445068"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=445067"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=445067"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=445067"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
