Jonathan Milan is right at the front, and the pace is slow enough for him to adjust his rain jacket.<\/p>\n<p>2026-03-01T13:41:56.257Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"216d97cc-0d54-4421-8a09-67ac40ddc9a9\">The pace is really up in the peloton as they approach the foot of the climb! Alpecin-Premier Tech win the fight for position, and lead them onto it.<\/p>\n<p>2026-03-01T13:40:04.247Z<br \/>\n<a id=\"elk-hameau-des-papins\"\/>HAMEAU DES PAPINS<\/p>\n<p id=\"619e7452-22e3-4176-991d-499f943ecc06\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The break have begun ascending the first of those six, the Hamea des Papins.<\/p>\n<p>2026-03-01T13:38:38.192Z<br \/>\n<a id=\"elk-100km-to-go\"\/>100KM TO GO<\/p>\n<p id=\"14aa7618-8629-4426-9eab-59883064c8f6\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The break&#8217;s lead is at four minutes, but might start to come down now, as they enter the crucial period of the race with 6 climbs crammed into about 40km. This is where we anticipate the action kicking off in the peloton.<\/p>\n<p>2026-03-01T13:32:32.155Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"b9e9c0cb-78a3-4685-bf8f-cafd88b8df77\">Sean Christian (Modern Adventure Pro Cycling) has also abandoned as a result of the Wellens crash.<\/p>\n<p>2026-03-01T13:30:52.404Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"33228197-7917-4c2f-812c-09093a012ef5\">And now there\u2019s been another crash, sprinter Tom Crabbe and Silvan Dillier among the fallers. Things are clearly very tense in the peloton.<\/p>\n<p>2026-03-01T13:29:07.440Z<br \/>\n<a id=\"elk-dnf-tim-wellens\"\/>DNF &#8211; TIM WELLENS<\/p>\n<p id=\"21e57962-f1f7-4909-8284-db9ebce22c5e\">Unfortunately, it\u2019s bad news for Wellens. He has had to abandon the race<\/p>\n<p>2026-03-01T13:28:17.831Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"4245bf67-9ac8-41d8-999f-6f322f47b39d\">As runner-up from two years ago, Tim Wellens would have been another rider to look out for to try and break out of the peloton on the final climbs. We\u2019ll have to wait and see if he can recover from this fall.<\/p>\n<p>2026-03-01T13:24:53.574Z<br \/>\n<a id=\"elk-110km-to-go\"\/>110KM TO GO<\/p>\n<p id=\"6df8ed0c-4973-43da-a024-13017f3e590d\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Meanwhile the break still holds a big lead over the peloton, of almost four minutes.<\/p>\n<p>2026-03-01T13:23:20.476Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"ee61a543-33c0-462e-b0d6-91ee64a48fe8\">There\u2019s been a crash in the peloton, and about a dozen riders have gone down, including Tim Wellens.<\/p>\n<p>2026-03-01T13:22:31.020Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"695d8c2b-bd0f-43d9-91b5-2437b832dad6\">As we approach the decisive climbs of the race, which riders can we expect to launch attacks?<\/p>\n<p>Visma-Lease a Bike\u2019s Christope Laporte is one to watch. He looked great on the Muur yesterday, and has made the top eight in each of the last three editions of this race; and though normally he\u2019d wait for a sprint, the fact he\u2019s riding alongside fast-finisher Matthew Brennan, and the quality of the sprint field competing today, means he\u2019s likely to take more of a front-foot approach this time.<\/p>\n<p>2026-03-01T13:17:34.412Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"7fbcd4c8-39e4-43b3-8679-e053ea6c8201\">As well as his Unibet Rose Rockets teammate Rory Townsend, Elmar Reinders has also abandoned the race.<\/p>\n<p>2026-03-01T13:13:12.640Z<br \/>\n<a id=\"elk-la-houppe\"\/>LA HOUPPE<\/p>\n<p id=\"0906e6b8-a88d-4408-b200-4c98f0fd2826\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The riders are now tacking on the last of these three quickfire climbs, La Houppe. After this, they&#8217;ll enjoy the respite of a flat section before the race really intensifies for the final six climbs.<\/p>\n<p>2026-03-01T13:10:54.017Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"2d194f10-1446-47ea-8678-5d238f031ffe\">\u201cIt&#8217;s far from the last climbs to the finish line\u201d, Naesen added, \u201cso I would expect to see a select peloton fighting for the sprint, maybe half of the guys from the start.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He agreed that the absence of Mathieu van der Poel changes everything, &#8220;but I can imagine Mathieu in the bus last night asking himself do I really want to go on a 65 kilometre solo, \u2018cos that&#8217;s what he&#8217;d need to do to win this race, and that&#8217;s not going to make for a comfortable Sunday.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">As for Naesen himself, Decathlon are fighting for Tobias Lund Andresen in the sprint, so Naesen&#8217;s own role will be to cover breaks on the climbs.<\/p>\n<p>2026-03-01T13:10:12.407Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"785b949a-16f8-411c-b425-34aa02f8842f\">Oliver Naesen also spoke to Cyclingnews today before the race. A veteran of a huge number of Classics, Naesen is always one of the most insightful members of the peloton into one-day racing, and he views Kuurne as &#8220;being a battle between offensive Classics riders and sprinting Classics riders.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&#8220;It will be the same today. Chapeau for the effort!<\/p>\n<p>2026-03-01T12:46:12.348Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"49e51bc6-9131-43e6-9f8c-a64b411fbc70\">Regarding whether he&#8217;ll have his own chance, Groves said &#8220;We always go into it to work to deliver the best result for the team, and in that case it&#8217;s Jasper in a sprint. But if it&#8217;s an attacking final, we also need numbers in the front and that&#8217;s probably a role of mine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&#8220;I think I&#8217;m going to be better than yesterday. It wasn&#8217;t my best day, so yeah, we&#8217;ll see how we go and hopefully some good legs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>2026-03-01T12:45:14.668Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"135bfac1-77bc-42fa-b92f-c66ae85baccb\">With defending champion Jasper Philipsen in their line-up, and having won yesterday\u2019s Omloop with Mathieu van der Poel, there will be an onus on Alpecin-Premier Tech to control this race and bring the breakaway back.
