Amy Winehouse<\/a>\u2019s goddaughter, Dionne Bromfield, has criticised the Brit Awards<\/a> for their handling of a tribute to the late music icon in this year\u2019s ceremony<\/a>.<\/p>\n Last night, Grammy-winning producer Mark Ronson<\/a> was honoured with the outstanding contribution award, having shaped some of the biggest songs of recent years, from Uptown Funk to the Barbie movie soundtrack.<\/p>\n His career initially took off, though, when he collaborated with Winehouse<\/a>, as he produced her pioneering 2006 album Back to Black and she sang on his 2007 cover of Valerie.<\/p>\n Having reminisced on first meeting the late star as he took to the stage for his acceptance speech, Ronson, 50, also made her a big part of his performance, including their tunes and a clip of Winehouse speaking fondly of him.<\/p>\n However, many viewers believed a more personal touch could have been added, complaining that Bromfield, 30, was not asked to join, despite having an extensive music career of her own. <\/p>\n \u2018I feel like the #BRITs have missed an opportunity to have Dionne Bromfield pay tribute to her godmother, and sing the lead on the Amy Winehouse tribute part of Mark Ronson\u2019s set,\u2019 @MiichaelKing wrote on X.<\/p>\n \t\t \t\t Bromfield herself responded with a shrugging emoji, later issuing a full statement.<\/p>\n She began: \u2018I want to be clear, this was never about me being on a stage for the sake of being seen or \u201cthe look\u201d. This is much deeper than that.<\/p>\n \u2018Since Amy\u2019s passing, I\u2019ve faced years of specific people within the industry and surrounding it, making it incredibly difficult for me to move forward and progress in my career.\u2019<\/p>\n She continued: \u2018Amy championed me musically in ways that didn\u2019t always align with others around her, and after she passed, that was made clear, opportunities for me were blocked and doors were deliberately closed.\u2019<\/p>\n Bromfield, who first came to public attention after performing on Strictly Come Dancing<\/a> with Winehouse on backing vocals, further explained that the Brits wasn\u2019t just about \u2018one moment\u2019.<\/p>\n \u2018It was another reminder of what I\u2019ve been dealing with for many years,\u2019 she wrote.<\/p>\n \t\t \u2018To see so many of the people she loved musically included, while I wasn\u2019t felt like an insult not just to me, but more importantly to Amy and her legacy.\u2019<\/p>\n Bromfield concluded: \u2018I\u2019m not one to air my dirty laundry, but there\u2019s only so much someone can take and sometimes things need to be called out.\u2019<\/p>\n Her message came after one fan, @eubrunops, said Bromfield is \u2018one of the people who should most be remembered in any mention of Amy\u2019, since they share an \u2018eternal bond\u2019.<\/p>\n \u2018You would think! It definitely was NOT an oversight\u2026\u2019, replied the singer.<\/p>\n She responded to another, saying that she \u2018hasn\u2019t released music in a long time, and it hasn\u2019t been for lack of trying. I\u2019ll let you go figure\u2026\u2019<\/p>\n Bromfield was just 15 when Winehouse died in 2011 at age 27 from alcohol poisoning.<\/p>\n \t\t \t\t They were incredibly close, with Winehouse featuring in a cover her goddaughter did of Alicia Keys\u2019 If I Ain\u2019t Got You, which she uploaded to YouTube<\/a> in 2008.<\/p>\n The Rehab songstress was a huge supporter of the teen\u2019s blossoming career, with Bromfield saying in a 2023 interview to mark what would\u2019ve been her 40th birthday that she \u2018gave her the motherly side that she wanted\u2019 in an industry surrounded by adults.<\/p>\n \u2018She was really adamant on me getting singing lessons,\u2019 Bromfield recalled, explaining how Winehouse would recommend material to her and encouraged her to attend Sylvia Young School.<\/p>\n Winehouse\u2019s struggles with her mental health<\/a> and addictions were well known, but Bromfield never wanted to \u2018add fuel to the fire\u2019 by \u2018putting her down\u2019 when they were together, as she knew she was \u2018trying to get better\u2019.<\/p>\n \u2018So my way of helping was by being like, if she\u2019d been putting on weight, I\u2019d be like, \u201cYou\u2019ve put on nice weight today. You look really good.\u201d Or if she\u2019d done her hair really nice, I\u2019d say, \u201cYour hair looks really high today.\u201d Just making her feel confident in herself,\u2019 she told Glamour<\/a>.<\/p>\n As for her legacy, she declared that there will \u2018only ever be one Amy\u2019, and she inspired others by \u2018being true to herself\u2019.<\/p>\n \t\t \u2018I think anyone that really ever met her or watched interviews or anything like that saw that she was just an honest, authentic person. And that\u2019s why I think probably haven\u2019t seen anyone like that since, because it\u2019s very rare.\u2019<\/p>\n Bromfield, who dropped her debut album in 2009, has released more music since her godmother\u2019s death, including an album in 2011.
