Arne Slot<\/a> has explained how Florian Wirtz<\/a> is the replacement Liverpool needed when Trent Alexander-Arnold<\/a> ran down his contract to move to Real Madrid<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Alexander-Arnold\u2019s efforts to leave his boyhood club have left a sour taste in the mouths of supporters, but Slot and his staff have quickly moved on.<\/p>\n

A remarkable summer of spending which amounts to \u00a3295 million so far, and could feasibly exceed \u00a3450 million, has improved a title-winning squad and revamped their setup.<\/p>\n

Central to that is the British record signing of Wirtz, who has shone throughout pre-season including in his natural No. 10 role in Monday\u2019s 3-2 win over Athletic Club<\/a> at Anfield.<\/p>\n

Speaking to LFCTV after the game \u2013 which followed an earlier 4-1 victory<\/a> over the same side \u2013 Slot detailed his renovation work and pointed to Wirtz as a replacement for Alexander-Arnold\u2019s creativity.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think there\u2019s always room for improvement, in every department,\u201d the head coach explained.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve added a few, in my opinion, extra weapons.<\/p>\n

\u201cFlorian has a lot of creativity in the final third. We\u2019ve lost, with Trent, a lot of creativity from the back.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo Trent\u2019s crosses and picking out runners was so special; I think Flo has this quality as well \u2013 in a totally different position, but he brings that creativity.<\/p>\n

\u201c[We have also added] the pace of Hugo, the pace of both full-backs \u2013 Milos and Jeremie.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou need to make, in every thing you do, the next step, because our competitors are not sitting still either.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot only do they try to improve as well, but they\u2019ve also made a lot of signings like we all have.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo that\u2019s why it\u2019s going to be a very interesting Premier League<\/a> again.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Liverpool\u2019s interest in Wirtz goes back years, it is likely that their decision to push ahead with a \u00a3116 million deal was partly informed by the loss of Alexander-Arnold.<\/p>\n

The No. 66 was such a unique talent in his starting role as a right-back that it was widely expected that his exit would prompt a change in how the Reds build up their attacks.<\/p>\n

Now it is set to run through Wirtz as the central hub in a 4-2-3-1, while \u2013 as Slot noted \u2013 new full-backs Milos Kerkez<\/a> and Jeremie Frimpong<\/a> will offer more of an orthodox presence with relentless energy up the flanks.<\/p>\n
